thats ok hun, no worries!
Think i would be ok if i graduated around same time as you, but a whole decade earlier might not swing it!!
But seeing as I paid off my 1st loan quickly, no missed payments etc I dont see why there is such a rule anyway. 5 years feels like a number plucked out of the air!!

lol! Hey soz if I have caused mass confusion haha!

I am sure when I rang, the man (who was actually very rude and not helpful!) said something like there is a limited amount of yrs you can apply for a student loan. I think it's so that you cannot just claim off the government forever or some silly reason! All students should be allowed some financial help I think!! Spec student midwives!

I only rang due to me already completing one yr of a teaching course. I was worried I would get turned down, which I wasnt.

Well i did three years of a musical theatre degree and just spoke to my lea who have told me I cannot get help with tuition which I said the NHS help with that but they also said I cannot get a student loan! Which is really stupid to be honest. Wish I had known when I started the degree that I wouldnt want to do musical theatre! But I guess we change dont we. Looks like its going to be even harder than I originally thought. Back to the drawing board to see if I can afford to do the course.

see I cant understand this as at the end of the day it will be us paying it off!
And besides they offered me a loan for last year which I declined as I decided not to do anymore in musical theatre.
Dont have a clue what I will do!

you are all allowed to apply for a non-means tested basic maintenance grant (loan)! i think i have confirmation of this somewhere or other, but if you speak to the student loans company they automatically say no because as soon as you enter that you have done a previous degree it blocks the system from doing anything else to your account.

i was speaking to a lovely bloke from my LEA about it and he explained what it was about, and that they were working on getting the system sorted for us troublemakers lol (he didn't actually say that). someone else has looked into it as well and received an email or something from some politician or other haha -i will see if i can find it and post it here.

all is not lost yet (well it had better not be or i can't do the course and feed 2 kids!)

well i appealed the decision and wrote to my MP, and was still told No!!
post any relevant info you can, it would be good to know. If some LEA's are budging and some arent it would be good to have better evidence to strenghten ANOTHER appeal!!

Ok these are just some PMs i had, so nothing concrete:

Hi

I spoke to LEA on Thursday - they first said that I wasn't entitled to a 2nd loan. However, about an hour later the lady from the LEA called me back and said that I was entitled. Yippee!!!! Apparently under the Education Regulations Act 2007 anyone who is entitled to an NHS Bursary can get a student loan albeit at a reduced rate - for London Unis this currently is £3180.
and:

I have had a response from Alan Johnson (Health Secretary) today - the link stating that WE ARE ENTITLED!!!!! to a reduced rate loan is:http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Educatio...ts/DG_10034874
hope the person who sent me them doesn't mind me posting, but if it helps.....


I'm going to ring my LEA tomorrow and will post back with what they say (if i get through to someone)

thanks so much for the info.
it looks promising but i am in the second year and have been through it time and again with LEA that i know not to get my hopes up! looks like Alan Johnson infor has not quite filtered down to the little bods!!
