Question Bursary calculator! Confused!

Hi all

Have been looking on the bursary calculator and reading what others have said and am totally confused!

I have two young children, my husband works part time and is on low income... so why does it say I get £0 for the parental allowance and dependents section??? Am I putting in something wrong?
Can any body tell me what financial support there is besides this too? I don't think I will go for a student loan as I already have one from my first degree!

Money is so tight and hubby is worried about this if I go for uni so I need lots of ammo to convince him it will be ok!!

Thanks

I wouldn't know if you are putting anything in wrong. But my hubby is on a low wage and I get parental allowance, dependants allowance and help with childcare costs.

well i have played around with the bursary calculator all night now -and i get different amounts nearly every time grrr.

BUT the question i have is: when you actually fill out the application form, the questions on it are nothing like what's on the calculator....

for example -the calculator asks what earnings are expected to be in the next academic year (spouse) and also what they were for last year, and it also asks specifically what spouses expenses were last year (and expected next yr)-- (expenses being NI/tax/mortgage/life assurances etc etc)
BUT on the actual form -it only asks what STUDENT's income is (only if the course is part time, so NIL to all that then as we are doing full time) and looks at STUDENT's NI/tax/mortgage etc etc, but there is no section for what we expect dh to earn next year -nor is there anywhere that takes into account his tax/NI contributions for last year...........

........now the tax and NI surely makes a big difference to the residual income part?

oh poo to it all -i'll get the basic and nothing else i'm sure!

anyone help??

There is a section for OH's income. There is also extra bits to fill in for OH on the dependants allowance form. You'll need to fill in a basic form, dependants allowance form AND a childcare form

My forms certainly had a section for DH's income. As well as having to include a copy of his P60!

Hi ladies, thanks for all your advice. I guess it is not as simple as if you earn (blah) or less you get (blah) amount, but I thought it might be if you have one child you get (blah) and two you get (blah) etc? Is that not how it works? That would be too easy hey!!

the calculator reckons i'll get nothing at all for my dependants allowance -just the basic bursary, -is it still worth filling in? anyone actually been told none on the calculator and then actually been told they'd get some? my parental allowance bit varies everytime i have a go!

going to fill out the forms anyway! just coz they're so much fun!! hmmm

can't wait for the childcare one!! especially as i don't even know my time table or anything yet (childcare for outside of school hours if necessary) great!

The bursary calcualator did not do much for me!

I applied anyway and receive childcare , dependents and maintenance money as OH is on a low wage, you never really know what you are going to get until you receive the breakdown form from the bursary peeps.

Beware too that us second years have all received cuts to our bursaries this year and are being charged the difference (some question of overpayment) despite being in training for a year and a half (note there is a disclaimer on the applications similar to that of WTC which states if they pay you over the amount they later find you entitled to be you must pay them back in full) these cuts have been predominantly from the childcare element of it. This has cuased many problems for all of us and additional money worries, so be careflu of your budgeting in case it happens to you.

Just read on another forum that degree students don't get bursaries, only student loans! Is this right or is it that they get means-tested bursaries only? I am so confused.
I did the calculator thingy and coz have 3 kids it seems to say I'll get more than I'm earning now!! If i get nothing then i may as well give up this minute as can't afford to do it on what my husband earns
