Default Housing benefit question

My daughter is moving into her first home next weekend, so there will just be me living here then.

I know I will get full discount on my council tax (I rung and enquired this afternoon) I rent my home from a registered social landlord, does anyone know if I will be entitled to any help towards my rent whilst I am at uni?

I meant to ring up and enquire, but I forgot until it was too late

Thanks Pauline

well, I don't know the whole ins and outs of housing benefit, so can only go by my own experience.

I do recieve Hb from the council to help pay my rent to a private landlord. I am a single mum with 2 children and recieve an NHS bursary and child tax credit but not a student loan as this is my 2nd degree. So my financial situation, according to my local authority is that I am indeed entitled to Hb!

i don't know how heavily this is influenced by the fact that I have 2 children, so as your daughter has just left home midwifemissy the situation might be quite different????

Anyway, do take the time to phone them as i'm sure you will be entitled to something, a third of your rent maybe??

Thanks Ollybolly,

I will give them a ring as soon as I get chance, worst thing they can say I guess is that I am not entitled to any help

Unless you have a long term illness or disability that you are receiving benefits for already, it is unlikely that you will get any help.

Full-time students without dependants (at home) or a disability are not usually eligible for benefits.

The unis have access to learning funds which you can apply for if you are suffering hardship.

Some students also work as bank HCA's during thier training to get some extra cash.

It's a crap situation, especially as they work you like a donkey for three years!

Thanks for your reply,

I have already had help from the access to learning fund, and I have already filled in a re-application form due to the change in my circumstances. Just need to find out what proof they need before I send it in.

The housing benefit was just a long shot really, didn't think I could claim, but thought I would ask anyway.

You need to tell the bursary company, as they may have taken your daughters income into acount when assessing your entitlement, so perhaps you could phone them up, they may offer you a better bursary, they are supposed to include rentend accomodation now, I know when I started they didn't, they only considered mortgaged, so unfair.x
