Default The boggling world of the NHS Bursary

An NHS bursary is an annual grant that is not subject to income tax or National Insurance, paid once a month (usually on the third Friday of the month) for the duration of the programme. Degree students may be eligible for a means-tested bursary, where household income will be taken into account, and this will be reflected in your grant. Additional allowances may be made for students with dependents. Students who receive a means-tested bursary can apply for a reduced student loan. Hardship funds are available which offer assistance to students in serious financial difficulty.

Who is eligible for an NHS funded bursary?

In order to qualify for NHS bursary support, those applying for diploma and degree level programmes will have to:
  • Have been ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom, Channel Islands or the Isle of Man throughout the three years preceding the first day of the first academic year of the programme, other than for the purpose of receiving full-time education; and
  • Be ordinarily resident in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland on the first day of the first academic year of the programme; and
  • Have settled status in the United Kingdom within the meaning of the Immigration Act 1971 on the first day of the first academic year of the programme. This means that there must be no restrictions on your length of stay in the United Kingdom.
If you are an EU national, you may have your tuition fees met, but you will not normally qualify for a maintenance grant or bursary.

More detailed information regarding eligibility can be found on the Student Grants Unit website www.nhsstudentgrants.co.uk
