| An NHS bursary is an annual grant that is not subject to income tax or National Insurance, paid once a month (usually on the third Friday of the month) for the duration of the programme. Degree students may be eligible for a means-tested bursary, where household income will be taken into account, and this will be reflected in your grant. Additional allowances may be made for students with dependents. Students who receive a means-tested bursary can apply for a reduced student loan.
