Just take your time to read the question thoroughly and then just waffle it allout, it doesnt matter if you dont say it in the rigt order so dont worry about that its just about making sure you cover everything!

Look at the props they have given you and use them all they are there for a reason! Remember to always seek consent (except for resps!) and to wash your hands and to say you would feedback your findings to the woman and then document in the notes - no matter what the skill is! you will always need to do this!

Good luck, let us know how you get on!

xx

Thanks for the advice Josie,

I know what skills we have had to learn, but my brain is mush and refuses to hold onto what I am trying to remember

I will find out on Wednesday afternoon how I have got on, if I don't pass then I can't progress on

Thanks Tracy,

I can re-take the exam (clinical skills), but not until June I think it is, it sucks but what can you do?

Hi and welcome to the site.

Thanks for your good wishes too.

Well, my clinical skills exam was awful, the morning started badly when the train I needed to get to uni was delayed and wouldn't get me there in time. So I had to catch a bus and walk for what seemed like miles.

By the time I arrived at uni I was really stressed, went into the exam and was told I would be tested on blood pressure and pulse.

They asked questions first and my mind just went a complete blank, then I had to perform the skill, I messed that up by only describing what I was doing for part of the test, then each skill was followed by more questions.

One of the tutors kept looking at me when I had finished my answers in a way that made me feel she was thinking I was stupid, she probably didn't think that (I hope) but that is how I felt.

I knew the answers to the questions, and I knew how to do the skills, pulse being the one I struggle with most, but as I started to take the tutors pulse I realised I had said the wrong thing for the normal ranges, so that ruined my test as I lost all thoughts of what I was doing. I did correct the normal ranges, but again got one of the figures wrong.

By the time I left the room all I wanted to do was cry, so, I don't need to wait until Weds to hear 'sorry but.....' Not sure I am really cut out for this after all.

Hope everyone else has a better time than I have when they do theirs.

Pauline

Of course you're cut out for this P, I have never met you, but you come across as kind, caring, supportive, knowledgeable for your stage of training, and you're obviously so motivated and have worked so hard to get this far. This is one setback - and remember you may still pass, but I think you#re being very hard on yourself.

I have recently worked with a student who is very much like the impression I get of you - she's amazing with the women, so caring and patient, and even when she has 26 things to do she makes them feel she has all the time in the world for them. She goes to pieces when she feels that she's being marked or assessed - I did a lot of my evaluation of her by listening from behind curtains when she didin't know I was there! She has just qualified and is a solid, grounded midwife who with a bit more experience will be fantastic. It's good to not think you know it all - we all know people like that, but just pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and carry on, It's worth it in the end.

Dory,

Thanks so much for your support and encouragement, I know I will probably feel differently in the morning, but right now it feels like the end of the world lol.

I think it would be fairer if we were able to carry out the skills on someone we didn't already know, but we have to do it on one of the tutors, I find that adds more pressure to an already stressful situation.

Oh well, I guess I will find out the dreaded outcome on Weds.

Pauline
