| Hi SC A personal statement is personal to you! Most Universities are looking for certain qualities when they are reading your PS. They want to know things like: - you understand the role of midwife - that you show some team working i.e volunteering, in the jobs you have had etc - that you are able to manage your time and that you can complete tasks/projects etc. The list is probably endless and the Universities do all look for differing things. Some people mention their children and if pregnancy made you want to become a midwife then I would say that. We have a really good section with Personal Statements on it and I would suggest that you read them before attempting to do yours. If you want anyone to read and help with your statement then just ask!! http://www.studentmidwife.net/personal-statements/ Good luck and once you start writing your PS you will be surprised at how much you can write!

| When I went to an open day before applying to my uni, I spoke to a tutor there as I was worried about being rejected due to lack of hospital experience (I'd heard it had happened to others) so I asked her about it, she asked me if I had kids, I said yes, to that she said 'well you have plently of life experience and you can bring that to midwifery'. So, really agree with the others, it certainly won't go against you. Good luck! |

| HI SC! I have children and talked about this in my personal statement and interview at swansea. This was no problem as they offered me a place! I contradict what m supposedly wants too as I'm 27 left school with just GCSEs and am doing access. Go with what you want to say as your true self is not going to shine through. From when we PM'd before spunky, you have so much to bring to midwifery, so how can having children be a negative??? Also I think the lady in question that you were talking to should ring for feedback or email as a friend of mine did. Tick boxes dont give much of an answer in my way of thinking, as to why they were unsuccessfull.

| i spoke of my boys and experiences of childbirth in personal statement and interviews. the only time i've noticed it being frowned upon was during the group discussion at interview. odd people mentioned their experiences, which was fine, but one person constantly turned everything round to her, her pregnancies and her kids!! we were asked by the admissions tutor to stick to views on midwifery and not personal experiences. i'd say your fine to mention them when relevant then leave it at that. Good luck x

| In my experience I have found that unis all want someting different, I was told by Glamorgan that I had too much information about myself and not enough about the role of the midwife, I had an interview at Swansea but was unsuccessful due to a lack of 'sensitivity' (hand written and UNDERLINED after the tick boxes, must've really upset them!lol!) but had interview and conditional offer for Cardiff??!! Really I think it pretty much goes on whether they like the sound/look of you on the day. But definately go with what feels right for you otherwise I think you sound a bit false and a bit contrived. Sorry to go on a bit but the whole thing baffles me!

| ok thanks i asked my tutor last night about personal statements and was told that theresno problem mentioning your kids as long as you know what a role of a midwife is and the skills and know that its demanding then you should be fine i was told thats its discrimination if they go against you because of your kids it is clear to me now thanks everyone xxxxxx
