Hi Donna, write in your post why you feel you would like to be a good midwife and what you could personally bring to the role?

Say it from the heart

Have you looked at the examples on here?

I have no 'work' based experience, my experience comes from my own pregnancies which were extremely difficult and emotional. Also I was the birth partner for my neighbour who went into labour at 32 weeks and her baby was born and rushed off to NICU so I supported her through her ups and downs while he was in, he is now home safe and well a healthy 3 year old and his mum always thanks me for the support I gave her and her family.
Will having no work based experience affect my application? I was the sole carer to my grandad for 7 years would I be able to put that down?

Hi Donna,

I had very little midwifery care experience when I applied, other than like you my own pregnancies. I had been a carer for my Mum & Dad for many years, and put this on my application.

So, in answer to your question, I don't think having direct midwifery experience is essential, the uni's understand how difficult it is to get this. I would put down about the care you gave your Grandad, as this will have given you skills that you can transfer to midiwfery, such as time management and communication skills for instance.

Good luck with your application. x

Just one thing that might be good to mention, when you supported your friend who had the 32 week baby, do you remember about the care from the midwife. What did you observed care wise. Did it inspire you? Did you feel you wanted to be that midwife careing for that woman.

Not sure if that makes sence. Good luck

Hey Donna, I also had no midwifery care experience when I applied. I agree that they don't expect it. The only caring experience I had in my statement was a brief mention that I helped my grandparents with their housework after they'd both been ill.

I did however, link my current skills with that needed as a midwife. I think as long as you can show that you are aware of the skills needed and have developed some of those skills then you'll be fine.

Your experience certainly does count, caring for your grandad, raising children of your own and helping your friend, I think you sound like an excellent candidate. Good luck x

Hi Donna,

I currently work for the University Admissions Service (I have a place at uni for this september) and helped lots of my classmates with their personal statements. I also mentioned in mine that I helped my mother with my two disabled grandparents so definately put that in!!

I would be more than happy to have a look at a draft for you and give you a few tips!

In my own statement I mentioned that I have had to work hard at gaining my qualification on the access course and that I have considered all aspects of becoming a midwife.

One of the questions I was asked at interview was " is there anything that you may find difficult to cope with whilst studying on the course?" I was quite honest and said that shift work may be quite difficult just because I hadnt experienced it before.

Be positive about yourself in your statement, but also they will ask what you think are your weaker areas.

If you bear some of these questions in mind it may help you to write a statement.

You are more than welcome to have a look at a copy of mine.

I hope I havent gone on too much!!!

Hello everyone,

I have been reading these little views on how to complete a supporting statement. I will have to write mine for this september and i'm worried. Are there any examples on this site from students that have been successful in the past.

Any help will be appreciated. xx
