I may put mine up once this application cycle is over providing I get a place... though I'm not sure since people may just copy it!

Well Lilstar, I think its about trust, I cant see that people can just copy it as its personal to the applicant no two applicants have the same background and experience plus its in our rules that everyone signs up to not to plagarise. Also it would only disadvantage them as if they got an interview based on someone elses PS then they wont be able to speak to it, bring it to life at interview etc. The idea is soley to give people ideas and inspiration.

This is my personal statement, it got me interviews at Bangor and Chester. Now have a place at Bangor and made it onto Chesters reserve list so I hope it gives people some ideas when they're writing their own.

I am currently in my final year studying AS/A2 Health and Social Care. I am particularly enjoying the modules on Research and Social Policy and am basing my research assignment on the attitudes of men versus women with regard to abortion and my social policy assignment on the national shortage of midwives. I am also studying OCN Caring for Clients which covers the topics, care of the pregnant woman and neonates and includes both physical and psychological issues relating to birth, antenatal and postnatal care for both mother and baby. I have found this subject extremely interesting and it has confirmed my desire to train and qualify as a midwife. In addition to this I am studying AS Sociology as a night course on a Thursday evening and have found that it has given me a broader understanding of issues in society and how these relate to peoples lives in general. I am finding the course and additional subjects very rewarding and now feel I am ready for my next challenge.

My reasons for wishing to pursue a career in midwifery stem from my own personal experience during my first pregnancy. I was very young and anxious about parenthood but the relationship I formed with one midwife in particular made such a big difference, she was not judgemental in any way and did all she could to encourage me to have confidence in myself. My interest was stimulated further five years ago when I was asked to be a friend's birthing partner. She had recently split with her partner and I became her main source of support during her pregnancy accompanying her to antenatal checks and ultimately at the birth of her baby. I felt very privileged to be part of such a special time in her life. From these experiences I have found that the support and care a woman receives during her pregnancy can make such a big difference and feel that I would have a lot to offer as a midwife.

During my course I had the opportunity to do work experience with the health visitors based at a local clinic. I was involved in the mother and baby drop-in group, the baby weight check clinic and home visits to families. I found this a valuable experience and enjoyed meeting the mothers and their babies and learning about the different problems they faced and exploring ways to overcome them. It also gave me the opportunity to develop my communication skills in difficult circumstances such as the time we were faced with a hostile grandmother during a home visit to a new mother and baby. She felt that the needs of her daughter (who was struggling to breastfeed) were being overlooked in favour of the baby. The situation was turned around by taking time to listen to the mother, checking her breastfeeding technique, reassuring her that what she was experiencing was normal and providing her with a telephone number she could use when times were difficult.

From my previous employment experience I have learnt how to work effectively as part of a team and also to use my own initiative especially during my bar work when I would on many occasions be left in charge of the bar. I had to learn to deal with people who were not always at their best by the end of the night and often had to diffuse difficult situations with tact and diplomacy. I feel I have developed through my life to become a confident, friendly person who likes a challenge and isn't afraid to ask for help when needed. As a lone parent with two boys aged fourteen and nine I have become self sufficient and developed strategies for balancing home life and college. I have the full backing and support of my family who are all extremely proud of my achievements so far.

I am confident that I have the academic study skills, genuine interest, ambition and personality to be an asset to a midwifery degree course.

Default Re: Personal Statement Examples

here is my personal statement only got one interview with it so maybe it needed some fine tuning hahaha hope it useful and not boring lol xx

Midwifery is a profession I am very passionate about and I would thrive on the rewards and pressures that this profession has to offer. Being present at the birth of my nephew in 2004 made me more aware that this was the career for me. I was truly amazed at the professionalism of the midwifes and doctors who took care of my sister in-law, and I know that, with the right training, I would be able to offer at least the same levels of skill and service.

In September 2006 I returned to full-time education and by June 2007 I had completed a pre-Access science course. It proved to be an ideal course for someone who had been away from formal study for 10 years. I was able to demonstrate that I am a well-motivated, well organised and an enthusiastic student. It is now clearer to me what is required of a full time student. Now I am enrolled on an Access HE Science course. Although the schedule is demanding, I feel I am coping well with demands of this strenuous course.

In addition to my studies, I work as a volunteer at the Wirral Resource Centre and Toy Library. The centre is where parents and other family members can take children to play. The families that use the centre have children with special needs or children who were premature babies. At the centre I work with different health professionals, including physiotherapists, occupational therapists and neonatal midwives. Having the opportunity to work with these health professionals has increased my confidence and enabled me to develop my communication skills to a high level.

At first I found my work at the centre quite hard as I had no previous experience of working with children with special needs. However, through working at the centre for some time, I have grown to understand some of the problems facing the parents and their children. More importantly, I now appreciate the potential for growth and development that such children have.

In my spare time, I enjoy spending as much time as possible with my children, going swimming, to the cinema, and on day trips. When not with the children I like to meet friends and go out for a meal or drinks. I love being able to unwind with friends. I also find time to attend keep fit classes at my local gym. A few years ago I was over weight and unfit. Since taking action I have lost four stone and enjoy good health. The lessons learnt during this process have greatly influenced my attitude towards my children's health.

In the last few years, I have dedicated myself to bringing up my two children, now aged 8 and 4. In the past, I have done bar work, which enabled me to meet people with completely different backgrounds and lifestyles. Bar work really helped me develop people skills. I know how to develop a rapport with people from a wide range of backgrounds and I have developed the skills required for coping with difficult customers in a sympathetic, patient and tactful manner.

If I am to be offered a place to study midwifery then I know that I would be sure to make the most of what the course has to offer. Midwifery is the career choice that has inspired me to embark upon this lengthy but rewarding program of study and training. I hope to be able to see it through and eventually become an outstanding midwife.

Ok, this is mine, so far its got me one interview, Edge Hill said they would have loved to have me but my application was late due to my school. and im still waiting on Bangor and Keele.

Three years of long hours, shift work, intense study and exams may not sound like anyone’s idea of a good time. However, to me, it seems like a small price to pay for the privilege and satisfaction of supporting woman and their families in bringing a new life into the world. Although I understand the course will be both difficult and intense, I feel that my duty to care and fulfilment as an end result will keep me focused.

I was not fortunate enough to know exactly what I wanted to study at university when I finished my A-levels. Therefore, I took a gap year to gain experiences, earn some money and make some decisions. Since looking into a degree in Midwifery as an option I have both realised and been encouraged that this career suits my passion and personality perfectly. I am specifically interested in how techniques and knowledge is constantly changing, expanding and being updated; meaning that my education in this field will not end once I have my degree, but continue throughout my working life. Also the legal and ethical obligations of the job; although I have been lucky enough to work with people from numerous walks of life, I look forward to learning new skills in how to approach difficult situations, meeting new people and broadening my knowledge in adapting to people and situations.

I fully understand that the role of a midwife is not completely focussed on the birth; and that my own life experiences must be built upon alongside the medical content of the course. I recognize that communication with both parents, creating a trusted environment, being able to explain procedures and offer guidance, as well as support existing siblings will be part of my role. I feel that whilst working in particular jobs and volunteering, I have developed skills that will greatly aid me in these areas.

As a receptionist I have to communicate with the public on a regular bases; developing skills in being polite and friendly no matter whom I talk to. I also have to deal with people’s bank details; therefore I understand the importance of confidentiality when dealing with personal details and will have no problems talking to patients and colleagues. Whilst working as a coach at Active Camp and a senior assistant at a tuition centre I expanded my communication skills in talking to parents. I understand that discussing one’s child can be a sensitive matter and that people must be confident in knowing that you wish to help them and that their child’s wellbeing is a very high priority. I feel this will carry over to midwifery whilst discussing both the unborn baby and any siblings; parents must be certain that their children are important to me and that I will offer all the help available. Coaching trampolining has helped me as I am constantly adapting and increasing my skills in relating to children; not only do I discuss their progress and set goals with them, but also have to explain the technical side off moves they are trying to master. I feel this links to the profession as I appreciate that you may have to explain procedures and situations in a number of ways for different people to understand, and help women make decision and adapt the birth plan to suit them.

Outside of work, I enjoy taking part in sport myself, especially trampolining and swimming. I also take pleasure in getting away from London and mountain walking with my family, mostly in North Wales. Singing is also a hobby of mine, having been part of a choir since I was 8, I now sing for a gospel group who support a singer on her album and on tours where we visit other churches. Although I like spending time with friends and family, I am always up for visiting new places or experiencing something different.

I hope to come out of university with both knowledge and zeal that will aid me in becoming the most successful midwife I can be and look forward to using my degree to help others through the most amazing time in their lives.

Hope it helps
xxx

Hi guys, hope this helps. Was offered a place at Kings right after the interview, (so if you are preparing for Kings, let me know, may be able to help) but as my Uni was starting in May and Kings in September, I opted for that + it's closer. It also got me Interviews at Middlesex, Christ Church and Thames Vally, I got turned down by City University...........

I have always been interested in midwifery. I started pursuing this interest more intensely after the birth of my two children. The positive experience I had during pregnancy and delivery, greatly influenced my decision to pursue a career in this profession. I volunteered at the Maternity Unit in my local hospital in 2004 and the experience continues to fuel my interest in midwifery and my ambition to become a midwife. I believe that midwifery offers a diverse role in the care of women and the opportunity to make a difference in their lives. It promises continuous professional and personal development, which I believe is important to being a good midwife. This is why I am attracted to a career in this profession.
To attain the relevant foundation needed to pursue a higher education in midwifery, I enrolled on the Access to Nursing course at a local College, which I will be completing in June 2007. I enjoy the lessons very much particularly, sciences, mathematics and professional studies. My degree in Business Administration has also encouraged me to approach this career change with confidence and enthusiasm. I believe the skills I acquired during my study such as; report writing, working in groups, presentation and communication skills will ensure my success on the midwifery course and in my future role as a midwife.
The demands of the Access course have enabled me to improve on my organisational and time management skills. It has also improved on my ability to prioritise my workload effectively and approach work, study and family life with focus and discipline. I have attained excellent grades as a result, and I have met all assignment deadliness to date. I intend to transfer these skills to my future study and role as a midwife.
I value every moment I spend working as a volunteer at the Maternity Unit. I have gained a vast amount of practical knowledge and experience, which continues to influence my decision in becoming a midwife. My varied responsibilities include assisting midwives in delivering babies; preparing mothers for operating theatre; assisting in the immediate care of mother and child after a caesarean section; encouraging mothers to breast feed; answering phone queries and providing guided tours of the unit to expectant mothers and their partners. This role encourages me to communicate effectively with patients, work in a team environment, be non-judgmental and handle sensitive information in absolute confidence. I will transfer these skills to my practical study at university.
My experience as a service coordinator in a busy business environment has equipped me with transferable skills such as, the ability to work and make decisions under extreme pressure. My current role as parish secretary and finance administrator demands the ability to pay attention to details, work independently and meet strict deadliness, whilst running the parish office. I find my people skills have improved vastly as result of dealing with the general public. These are attributes that I believe are important to the role of a midwife.
In my spare time, I am the treasurer for the Mothers Union, a role I enjoy very much because we support and advise mothers in the community. I also like spending time with my family, walking and cooking. I cook every Friday for a group of 20 children at the under five’s crèche in my area.
I want to develop my personal and professional skills through midwifery and in return be a valuable contributor to the profession and an asset to the NHS. I believe that my voluntary experience combined with my commitment and enthusiasm will ensure my success on the midwifery course.
