| Well even though its a little late for this year i thought id post my personal statement anyway...It got me interviews for all of the five universities i applied to so i thought id offer it up to help people who are applying in the future so here goes.... Midwifery to me is as much a passion as an occupation. I feel that the immense satisfaction I will gain by nurturing a woman through this part of their lives will be invaluable. Midwives devote themselves to caring for women and their families through one of the most stressful and life changing processes they will ever experience. They support, reassure and educate pregnant women and their families throughout pregnancy, during childbirth and beyond. Pregnancy and the miracle of how a body can create another human life became a fascination of mine as I grew older. During my own pregnancy I started to understand the role of a midwife in more detail. I realised that there were more sides to pregnancy and that things do not always go as planned. Additionally I have experienced miscarriage, foetal deformity and still birth through my own life experiences and also whilst supporting my friends and family through their pregnancies. As I was the first of my peers to become pregnant I found that I was the one that everyone looked to for advice and reassurance throughout their own pregnancies. I had the opportunity to be one of my closest friends birthing partner throughout the births of her two children. The first birth resulted in an emergency caesarean section, and the second with a forceps delivery. Both births were very traumatic experiences for her however I succeeded in keeping her calm and focused throughout. Another of my friends had two consecutive pregnancies that both ended in still birth at 24 weeks gestation. Fortunately she found it very comforting to speak to me about her experience, and I found that I helped her to come to terms with her losses. Currently I subscribe to the Practising Midwife and the MIDIRS Journal. Also during my personal time I am studying “Mayes’ Midwifery -A Textbook for Midwives” by Henderson and Macdonald. These texts are giving me a further insight into midwifery, keeping me up to date with current concerns, issues and topics being discussed throughout the midwifery profession. Throughout my working life I have gained many skills and qualities that would contribute towards my chosen career as a Midwife. As a teenager I volunteered at a riding for the disabled association where I supported children and adults with both physical and mental disabilities. The ten years of working with people, although not in a clinical setting, has enabled me to be confident in my ability to work with individuals from all different mental health, physical health and socio cultural backgrounds. Additionally I was a carer for my grandfather when he was seriously ill. During my adult employment I have improved my communication skills and time management skills as I worked within a team environment. Through my hard work and dedication I was promoted to supervisor where my responsibilities increased. During the summer I hope to find employment that will help me gain more care centred experience. I am currently seeking a voluntary placement within the NHS or the National Childbirth Trust. In addition to my work focused attributes I am a very capable sports woman. I have competed regularly for both my school and county, being fortunate to break an 18 year record for high jump. Also I am very involved within the college, as I have been appointed class council representative for my current course. I deal with any issues that the students on the course may have and discuss them with the student council. The subjects that I have chosen to study are all providing me with relevant knowledge towards my chosen career. I am learning about the workings of the human body, gaining a deeper insight into the workings of the mind and learning about issues and concerns relating to health. Feedback from my tutors has been positive as I am progressing through the course. Finally I am now ready to progress my education further and know that I have the commitment and determination that I will need to fulfil my ambition of becoming a midwife. Hope this helps anyone that is looking to apply next year!! Sarah x

| I have chosen to apply for this course because I have always wanted to become a midwife. My wish for a career had been put to the side as I raised my family. I have had very different experiences during my 5 pregnancies and births. Most were good. I was also a birthing partner for my sister-in-law. Watching the birth of my nephew was an incredible experience. I believe that women deserve care which meets their individual needs and is 'woman centred.' I want to make a difference to the women and families that I work with to ensure they can enjoy the antenatal, and postnatal experience to the full. I want to meet the challenge of responding to and managing changing situations, be able to tailor care to individual needs and see the variety of people we care for as a pleasurable aspect of the job. I live in a diverse community and have previously worked as a full time volunteer with Sure Start. In my role as a member of the Parents' Forum, I was able to influence Sure Start service provision and help to organise and set up activities such as gala days. I was also part of the programme's Management Board, where I was able to express the views of the Forum and vote on issues around finance and policy which directly affected the local community. I worked closely with the Community Midwives to promote health and the importance of breast feeding. This included a one year in-depth training course to become a Breast Feeding Supporter and a member of the Breast Feeding Network (BFN). As such, I regularly attended a variety of groups to act as a role-model and provide information around breast feeding. In my role as a volunteer, I learned about the importance of building trusting relationships and effective communication. Previous employment has always involved working with people. After 2 years as a full time volunteer, I worked part time as a home care assistant, for 3 years, were I preferred to work with the clients who had the more challenging personal needs. I intend to study hard to become a midwife and once qualified, work towards becoming a community midwife and home births. I want to build caring and trusting relationships with my clients and ensure I can be there for them throughout. I appreciate that my local hospital is at capacity and I would therefore be willing to relocate for the right position. I am presently enjoying an Access course which includes human physiology, social policy and social issues in health. I'm sure this will give me a sound foundation to progress to a degree in midwifery. The road to becoming a midwife is one I have always wanted to travel and to date I have always put my family first. This is my time. I will strive to make the difference that was so sadly lacking during my first-born. I am very fortunate that I have the support and backing of friends and family. I am looking forward to going to University. As a mature student and a mother, I am sure that I have the skills, experience and ability to contribute effectively to a midwifery team if given the opportunity. I feel I have a lot to offer in terms of reliability, motivation, organisation and common sense. I am applying for this course because its my dream to embark on a career in midwifery.

| This is my personal statement that i used for Wolverhampton and Worcester Uni. I have been accepted at Wolves and have interview for Worcester on 31st of March. I was told before i submittted my personal statement that this is the biggest hurdle to cross as this holds a big part of getting an interview. Hope this helps people!! Last year I successfully passed the Access to Higher Education course at KidderminsterCollege. I chose to do this course because the career I wish to embark on is midwifery. I feel very passionately about becoming a midwife as I would like to give women a positive outlook on pregnancy and birth and make a real difference to their individual experience. Midwifery is a career I have wanted to pursue for the last 5 years mainly due to the excellent care I received during my own pregnancies. The team of midwives who cared for me were a great source of inspiration to me. I found the Access course thoroughly enjoyable if somewhat challenging at times but I feel that has benefited me as I will come across challenging situations as a midwife. The Access course has enabled me to develop my research skills, improve my writing and technical skills and manage my time more effectively. I have further developed my skills by completing an Open University course in ‘Understanding Health’ taken June to October 2007. I completed all the assignments and achieved all the learning outcomes. I am awaiting the final achievement result. I have just started another home course, GCSE in Human Physiology and Health and will take this exam in June 2008. I believe that I will make a committed midwife and when I attended the midwifery taster day in November 2007, I found it to be extremely informative and it made me more focused on becoming a midwife. I have also subscribed to ‘The Practicing Midwife’ in order to further my knowledge and comprehension of midwifery and I am constantly on the internet reading what student midwifes have to say about the realities of being a student midwife. Women’s health during pregnancy is extremely important and as a midwife I would aim to promote good health and educate the women in my care. I would hope to give them as much information as possible to enable them to make informed choices about the care they wish to receive and help them enjoy their pregnancies and gain a positive experience. I understand of course that things do not always go to plan and I would behave appropriately in times of distress. As a midwife it is important to maintain professionalism whilst at the same time be able to show compassion and empathy. I have gained a lot of experience through caring for my own two children. My eldest is 4 and has just started school and my youngest is 1. Although my children are still small I know I am able to devote the time needed to study. Becoming a midwife is important to me and I have a very supportive family who are prepared to help with childcare. As a midwife, I am sure that there will be times when there is an unhappy patient or relative and I will endeavour at all times to give them the support or advice they need. I enjoy working within a team which is an important role of a midwife but I can also be trusted to work using my own initiative. I know how to treat people as individuals with respect and dignity. I am also a good listener and can make people feel at ease around me. I feel these are essential qualities of a midwife I am very eager to learn and I am positive that I can face the challenges that midwifery will bring head on with lots of enthusiasm. I am confident that I can cope with the academic side of the course. The variety of experience I will achieve on the practical side of the midwifery course is very exciting and I would welcome the opportunity to work alongside qualified midwifes to learn as much as I possibly can. I am well aware of the hours that midwives work and have plenty of support from both friends and family. I know that I would be an asset to the field of midwifery and I am totally committed to succeed in achieving my ambition of being a midwife.
