Default Re: Personal Statement Examples

Ok here goes, this is the personal statement I used last year, it got me interviews at the two uni's I applied too. Good luck to everyone reading this and applying to uni.

I have wanted to become a midwife for as long as I can remember and having my own children only strengthened my desire. I am fascinated by the whole process of reproduction, pregnancy and birth and I want so much to support, inform and empower women, their partners and families at this very special time in their lives.
Until now I haven’t been able to take the first steps towards turning my passion into a reality. I was a single parent whilst bringing up my children and at the same time a full time carer for my disabled parents which is something I did from being in my teens.
The care my parents needed varied from day to day but included personal care, making, and accompanying them to various hospital and doctor’s appointments, liaising with various different agencies like Social Services, DHSS, Age Concern and Guide Dogs for the Blind so that their needs were fully supported. During this time I also went to college part time to study for my GCSE and GNVQ qualifications, I had to learn to manage my time effectively so that I could finish my assignments on time but still provide all the care my children and parents needed.
I have recently completed an Access to Health and Midwifery course part time and I really enjoyed studying again, the skills I learnt on the course such as essay writing and research will be very useful when I start the Midwifery course at university.
I understand that the role of the Midwife today is as diverse as the women and families she cares for. Her role involves caring for newborn babies, providing support for parents and also health education. A midwife is an independent practitioner and they work in all health care settings and are part of the multi disciplinary team, they liaise with GP’s Social Workers and Health Visitors. Midwives provide holistic care for women, their partners and families during pregnancy, labour and birth and during the first 28 days of the post natal period, after that it transfers to the Health Visitor.
In each of the jobs I have done previously I have had daily contact with the general public, and this has involved dealing with sensitive and difficult situations. I had to remain calm and be understanding of their needs, but at the same time be assertive so that I could give them the information they needed in a way they could understand. The knowledge and experience I have gained whilst in work such as excellent communication and IT skills, time management, accurate record keeping, diary management and being calm, patient and understanding will be transferable into my midwifery training.
In my spare time I enjoy reading, gardening, computers, taking my dog for walks, spending time with my Grandchildren, and making my own greetings cards, and these are things I will continue to do in any free time I have whilst at university.
I subscribe to The Practising Midwife, and The British Journal of Midwifery, and I am a member of the .......................where I enjoy learning about and discussing midwifery
My family understand the demands the course will have on my time, and they are all fully supportive of my decision go to university.
I pay attention to detail and I am accurate in all the work I do, I am punctual, reliable, honest and trustworthy, I am a good team player but also work using my own initiative, and I feel that the life skills I have developed while raising my children and caring for my parents will help me to become a caring and compassionate midwife.

Aww thanks Tracy,

I had a word limit to keep to, can't remember how many now, but I know I struggled to keep within it and say all I wanted to.

I just hope someone finds it useful

This is the edited version of my original personal statement and not quite finalised for my third attempt, but would appreciate any comments you guys may have.

After researching the profession, it has become clear that being a midwife is not restricted to just delivering babies! I realise that the role is much more extensive than this and will involve a great deal of community-based as well as hospital-based work with individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds.

As a first point of contact s/he is essential to the mother and her family, helping them to make educated and informed choices based on the options open to them. Midwifery is a career where I could make a positive impact on peoples lives, a career where I can care and communicate with people whilst being practical and constructive, drawing on my academic training too.

Although my previous employment has been office based I have learned and developed a range of skills and qualities that can be utilised in midwifery. As a team leader I have been responsible for both recruitment and training. I am dedicated and have excellent time management and communication skills. I relate well to people and, above all, I am an effective listener who is caring and compassionate.

In order to gain experiences of healthcare professions, I spent time as a volunteer on a gynaecology ward where I gained valuable insight into the Care sector and life on a busy ward. It also gave me the opportunity to speak with patients. I quickly discovered that there is no ‘typical’ patient and I have developed an appreciation of different cultural beliefs.

After completing my Access course, I decided to carry on studying AS Human Biology. I felt that this would further reinforce and consolidate my knowledge of the subject whilst keeping my academic skills up-to-date. Studying has helped to strengthen my analytical and negotiation skills, and enhanced my experience of working as part of a team. I have the ability, determination and confidence to succeed.

I am currently studying BSc (HONS) Adult Nursing at Plymouth University, which although fills many of my expectations, I do not feel that it is my lifes vocation, butbeing able to work with well women and their families during an important life transition would fulfill my passion. I am excited about further developing my practical and academic skills to become an effective Midwife entering a challenging career. I recognise that midwifery is physically, intellectually and emotionally demanding. I believe that as an autonomous practitioner I would be able to make a difference.

thanks
