Default Re: Help!! physiology of raised postnatal bp?

She was started the day after delivery I think. Apparently came in with oedema of the legs, hands and face during labour but that started to dissapear the day after and shes got none at all now. All the info I'v found has been about during pregnancy but nothing about why it persists after delivery. It's driving me nuts.

mmm, strange.
if 6 days PN and on Labetalol, then Bp should defo have started to come down by now. If normal AN and normal delivery etc there is no physiological reason that i know off for it to be raised for so long.

I know that when i came across it on community it was because Mums were stressed with dealing with a new one, or one extra in the house to sort out. If no other symptoms or problems, we would normally see it disappear by about day 10.
Is she breastfeeding?

No shes bottle feeding, shes a really young mum and this is her first. Was in yesterday and shes gone home now so it must have come down enough in the end. Still baffled me though think i'l bring it up with my tutor see if she can shed some light on it.

there was a really good reason for me asking whether she was breastfeeding, but looking at the time i posted the question, i know cant remember what it was!! Think my brain was going into overdrive but now cant remember my thought processess!
if you do manage to shed light on what happened let me know, i would be really interested.
am quite into bp, hypovolemia, maternal Bradycardia at the moment following horrible expereince on LW this week.

Well finally got the chance to ask about this today and was told it was most likely pre eclampsia! All that waiting and thats what I get back Was told that it sounded like she was developing it just before labour began what with the oedema and then her BP rising like that. I thought delivery was an instant cure but apparently not. Ah well, you live and learn

ha ha, thanks Lazy Moo! Not really worth the wait i suppose??!! It didn't sound serious enough to be eclampsia (as in not pre-eclampsia as P/N IYSWIM), as she was not c/o of any other symptoms, or so you thought!!
oh well, all sorted and thanks for remembering to find out

Yes it can carry on fulminating, as it affects the the internal organs (predominantly the liver and kidneys) and the body can take up to 6 weeks to return to its pre pregnant state so to do the organs acheive stasis. I would be concerned though if this womans BP had not dropped by now (personally) she may have developed hypertension, I presume they are still taking bloods?? Or have taken bloods? and dipsticked her urine??

but remebering what lazy moo has said (and i havent read back through the posts from the beginning) i thought raised bp was the only problem this woman had, so can it still be called eclampsia? I thought 2/3 or more symptoms need to be indicated? Otherwise, yes, you're right, it sound like hypertension!
