Default really great opportunity or dumb idea?

Hi all,
I'm going to apply for 2009 start, which I am tremendously excited about. In the meantime, I'm getting work experience, doing an OU course and having a second baby. In fact, I tested positive this morning (shhhhhh, dont tell. v early days - I'm literally 2 weeks pregnant!).

Anyhoo, it got me thinking... I want a home birth with a pool, but cant be a***d with the whole setting it up, keeping temperature, emptying it out.... I thought about getting a doula but remembered something my previous midwife said about students. Now, I'm not looking for a skivvy or anything! I wondered if its a good idea, and how I would go about, getting a student to shadow the whole pregnancy. Everything - appointments, they can do checks, come to scans, attend the birth, shadow the midwife in the days after the birth... I'm quite willing to be their case study/guinea pig. So long as they fill and empty the pool, lol!

comments anyone?

Amanda

Not sure many Uni's would support this - insurance issues....

Cant see why insurance would be an issue as long as they are a student at the uni and many unis are going over to caseloading anyway, where you follow someone through thier pregnancy and birth. I think its a wonderfully generous offer and think you should contact your local Uni and see what they think. May be good for the Uni to test it out if they arent looking at caseloading yet...

cheers TallPoppy, I'll do that. I just think that I'd like this sort of opprtunity for work exp or when I'm studying, so someone else might like it too.

Even with another on the way are you still considering a 2009 start. My little baby girl is just 13 weeks now. I too am looking at 2009 start, she will be nearly 2. I sometimes wonder if it may be too early? But I honestly dont think I can wait. Does anyone else have a young young child that could offer some advise?

Hi Cathryn

I have a 13 month old and am starting uni in 2009 too. I feel like she is too young but i want to try to get my training done before she starts school. It's hard to say when to start but you will know when it will feel right!I cannot wait to start, should of done this years ago, can't put it off any longer, it's exciting isn't it!

My two were 4 a couple of weeks back and I wish I'd waited to be honest - maybe to have started the access part time this year - therefore with a veiw to start the heavy stuff when they're 6. But that all seemed such a long way away when they were 2 and I just wanted to get on with it - time flys and they start school in september - I can't believe I gave away that part of their life!

Amandaletch - I was at my friends home water birth a few weeks back and her pool self regulated it's temp - came with a pump too for easy emptying - cost £80 a week I think she said...
