Question Can anyone help me with my questions about hours?

Hi everyone, I am new to this sight and looking for some advice about the degree course if anyone can help.

In the first year, what sort of hours can I expect to be doing? I know clinical placements will start reasonably quickly, but variations in unis aside - what are typical teaching hours, and similarly what about placements? Do you have to do whatever hours your mentor is doing, days, nights etc?

I need to give serious thought to how we would cope with regards to childcare etc. Thanks in advance.

hiya

i started uni 2 weeks ago, my placements start next week.

usually we start uni at 9.30 and finish about 3ish, but its supposed to be 4.30. If we get the work done then we can go earlier. We get an hour for lunch and break in the morning.

Hi Cora,

Welcome to the site.

My uni hours are usually 10am -4pm, but some days we are only in for a morning or an afternoon.

On placement it dpends where you are placed really, I started on community and that was 8.30 - 4.30 5pm ish. But on the post natal ward etc you can do either early, late or nights depending what your mentor is doing.

All uni's work differently. At the moment we are in (we do 5 week blocks) uni Mon 9-4, Tue 2-6 and Thurs 9-4. This changes every semester. In practice we do 37 hour weeks. I personally try to do 3 long days/nights, but some people prefer to do 5 early/lates.

Uni 3 days a week, placements 37.5 hrs a week, usually 3 long days in hospital (7.30am - 8.30pm or nights 8-8), but community is usally 5 days a week 9-4ish depending on caseload.
If you let everyone know the uni you are at someone might already be there and can give you a better idea.
The kids thing is hard, but you will probably find most of the people in your cohort are in the same position and will be really supportive.

Thank you everyone. It's helped me to get an idea of the sort of weeks you are having. I am hoping it will be Bradford, but who knows....
