I went to college with a now male student midwife. He's at a different Uni than me though, but I will be having placements at his trust hospital at some point, so will hopefully see him about (even though he lives round the corner from me ..lol). I know a few people here are on his facebook too, so might be talking about the same person.

I read somewhere there are only 112 in the UK. That's not many at all.

It's debatable whether women make better midwives than men. On one hand, a a female midwife can relate to how the woman is feeling and what she is going through.

But some men are excellent at caring for people and can be charming.

We have one training at our uni, he is on here but he's not posted for ages-same old thing with work building up etc...
We also had another one trained at our uni, and he is now a community midwife at Blackpool, he wrote an article in the practising midwife last month.
I think alot of male midwives tend to climb the ladder very quickly-thats just my opinion, women value their opinion as they relate them more to a doctor (so the feedback states anyway!!)

No, not on yours, I'm on his and seen you on his too..lol. I'll PM my facebook name to anyone who wants it, I'd rather not give my full name on here, as I have disclosed which uni I am at.

I was trained by a male midwife - did all of my labour ward time with him, apart from the last bit (long story...)

There was a bloke in my cohort who is now qualified, he is working at a hospital reasonably near where I am, I saw him when I went out on a transfer a few weeks ago and he's doing well

My mentor is a male midwife. He is good, but has some not so good points. He is not my mentor anymore (long story)

His practice was fine, I don't think he was that good with empathising with the women, and like the other male midwife always happy to push epidurals.

I think they get a hard time in the unit though, as it is so female dominated, they have no area to change in, have to be careful what they say to other midwives etc...
