Default Male midwives???

Hi all

I am posting this on behalf of my 'partner in crime' who is a very loving and traditional man, all in the right places, is that too much info

Despite this he was recently shocked (not being from the UK) to discover that there is such a thing as a 'Househusband' after watching the 1st or 2nd show of The X Factor. Anyway, as I am applying for 2009 entry, he is curious to know what the latest figures are for male midwives - potentially those who are practicing.

Any idea's apart form the 150 mark which I thought I read somewhere a few months back?

I dont know hun, think there should be more, I had a male midwife at the beginning of my first labour (induced due to pre eclampsia) and he was fantastic.

Wink Re: Male midwives???

Given the latest trends and strive for equality with gender issues, he is also wondering what a male midwife is called and has come up with the suggestion of 'midperson' given changes to upper management terms, e.g. chairman, chairperson, etc.

I should just let him join and post himself, he is passionate about this issue and I have apple pie to make

Thanks for your thoughts

Hi Sharna, in what way is your hubby passionate about male Midwives? From an equality point of view? I've heard only good things from people who have been looked after by one, and many of my friends have said they wouldn't mind being cared for by a man. But it must always remain a woman's choice to have a woman attend if she feels more comfortable that way. Some partners would be uncomfortable with another man present too and I think this has to be borne in mind. I knew a male Midwife many years ago (he was married to a Midwife too) and I can imagine he would have been absolutely outstanding at his job but I, personally, would not have felt at all comfortable with a male Midwife with any of my babies. I also prefer to see female doctors and that is my right.
