Default Enrichment Day - Breastfeeding.

Earlier this week I attended an enrichment day with La Leche League. I am a breastfeeding peer counsellor and went along to hear a guest speaker called Kathleen Kendall-Tackett. She has written a book called Breastfeeding made simple.

She is an american who has promoted breastfeeding and is a psychologist specialising in women's health. Her talk was amazing and was relevant I think to midwives as well as mothers and breastfeeding supporters.

She talked a lot about skin to skin and also about Kangaroo care. She has met Dr Nils Bergman who developed and implemented kangaroo mother care (kmc) for premature infants right from birth. She talked about skin to skin and kmc with term babies.

There was a lot of information and it was a really interesting talk. I spoke to her at the end and she was very happy to offer information.

For anyone needing to know more about kmc

Information about how birth affects women and about breastfeeding;

Kathleen Kendall-Tackett has a website that is a forum for new research on evidence based care for things like PND and breastfeeding. It is a really good information site and I feel is relevant for midwifery.

A good but tiring day!!

One really interesting thing she said was that babies breastfeed not mums, which makes sense really!
