Sorry, I don't understand. How does having very few centres (birth centres?) around you affect your ability to practising independently?

Doh silly me, i mean midwifery-led centres. I was thinking along the lines of alternatives to hospitals in the job-sense blah blah. Im half asleep today. So to clarify, i would like to work in a MW-led centre or independently

Okay, so since I'm a silly American (heehee), please help clarify: are you ladies becoming what we'd see as a nurse midwife? It would be hard for me to choose which route to take here if that is what I was doing. I would probably look into creating my own practice. As it is, I won't have the option of working in a hospital or not so I'll be doing only homebirths and have talked to another girl about partnering with her. I have been a nurse for 7 years now and am looking forward to the flexibility I will have not being in the hospital anymore.

I am training as a direct entry midwife, no nursing degree/diploma first.

Don't know about everyone else?

I would love to work either in the community (but my placement may change my mind on that) or as an independent midwife. My main drawback to those is I can't drive

I would love to be able to give women the kind of birth they want, without feeling pressured by 'the system', but maybe I still have those newbie rose coloured glasses on

Okay, then that's where I am, too, and I think everyone has seen how hard it is for me to say just what every midwife in this country does to get that...Direct entry midwives can not practice in hospitals, but many start their own free standing birth centers or just practice independently or with a partner.

Wow what a difference to this country, about the direct entry bit.
I thought I wanted to always be a community midwife, as 1st year was so lovely, but now I feel more supported and feel I have more of a safety net in the hospital setting, I love delivery suite, but it does sometimes worry me especially with the staffing levels and the crazy induction rate we currently have, but about the CTG bit we don't routinely CTG low risk women, and if women say no-then they say no and thats that. We only CTG high risk and if coming into labour with suspected/obvious SRM x

Wow here in NZ CTG is routinely carried out. Women (primip or multip) enter hospital and takenthrough to 'their room', on bed for admission CTG for 20 mins. Low or high risk, makes no diff. I mean what does the research say about admission CTG's?

I am a direct entry m/w and here in NZ we get to chose if we want to go into indy practice, either starting your own practice or entering a group alreayd established. You have a mentor that accompanies you to births for a certain cost until you feel confident that you can do a birth without any guidence so to speak. I am looking at indy practice mainly for the continuity of care that we provide. The partnership that is created between the family, woman and you is priceless.

There is too much politic in the hospital and the women do not get the care/support that they deserve. So I know where I am heading once I finish this degree
