At the risk of being branded a pedant, it is actually 'independEnt', not 'independAnt'. Also not sure about 'hospitalised midwifery' but I suppose, considering the current state of obstetric nursing, oopps, midwifery is in, one could deduct that 'hospitalised midwifery' is rather apt.

You got me, I cant spell. Erk. I hear mentors saying 'its easy to get hospitalised' and think I guess, like you say like 'obstetric nurses'. But then there seems to be this divide between the sterotypical airy fairy 'I'll get the lavendar oil as the shoulders are stuck' to the 'crank up the synto she's only got a multips OS' .....

Well what about Community Midwifery? I think maybe "Ward Midwifery/Midwife" is a more appropriate term?

Yea, you are with my thinking on this, its just a thought thats been running through my head, the difference between community and on site practice..... in my first year I attended alot of homebirths (jammy git I know) and when I went onto labor ward I was almost shocked, it didnt feel right strapping women down as soon as they came in, good reason or not...... but in a few weeks I was CTG'ing anything that stood still.....

I used the term indepedent vs hospitalised midwifery because it seems like 2 ends of a spectrum to me

Very true, but I think a lot of people would see themselves as working somewhere in the middle I'll shut up and shove off.

Just to clarify, what exactly are we discussing here? Which direction people are planning to go when they qualify, or are we attempting to make comparisons between independent midwifery and hospital based midwifery?

I was commenting on 2 ends of a spectrum that I am witnessing in practice (different attitudes and values) and then took it out to extremes for debate purposes ... to see if anyone else had picked up on anything like it in practice and i guess as you raise, it is likley to influence which path students may choose to tread so yea, all of the above

I am going to seriously consider Independent MW, but since there are very few centres around here, so i'll probably be an over-stretched hosp based CM.

My community placement is definately not what i thought it would be tho, the CMs are based in the antenatal clinic attatched to the hosp and so they work in the hosp a lot and hardly in the GPs. Plus if there's a homebirth, God help the rota, it throws everything totally off.
