| I have started filling out my applications for college to do the access course. I live in scotland so i think we do things different to england ( i think) i live in tayside which covers perth, dundee stirling ect. A couple of the colleges actually interview you for the access and your place at uni about the same time so you don't get on the course if you are not going to get onto the course at uni. Well what a nightmere all they do is say "GO FOR NURSING no jobs for midwifery" it is driving me crazy they have even less spaces i think i was told that one college takes on 1 midwifery student every year the most was 2.Well anyway i phoned up my local college the lady was very nice but straight away when she found out what i wanted to do her tone changed even more so when i told her well somone has to get the place. Then she harped on and on about nursing, she asked where i work and what qualifications i have, i have none left school ages ago she went silent. I told her that i worked in the hospital she seemed surprised but the icing on the cake the part which i wish i was a fly on the wall was when i also added " oh yes i also do part time work on the maternity wae in our local hospital" it went silent and all she said was oh right well then come and fill out an application and we will have a interview chat to see what from then but before she put the phone down again she said " i will say again at interview that midwifery is a difficult course to get on. rant over it just makes me sad that they try to put you off even at interview stage, even when i spoke to our head of access for our area they said do nursing first then midwifery. If they going to look at this forum just a message I WILL NOT GIVE UP !!!!!!!!

| This happens too much, poor you. Tell her the 18 month post-grad course is being phased out anyway! I can't believe how many people have this, as soon as you start researching midwifery education this is made quite clear! it is really annoying that everyone else thinks it is ok to put lots of people off and assume they won't get in! Glad you didn't listen to her, some of it is true, but not all. And as you say someone has to get in and most do, though not all of the best as there is not the room. good for you, and good luck

| How frustrating for you. I found this when I started college and was told this by a University on an Open Day. We all know that it is a popular course but if everyone believed it and doubted their ability, then few would apply and Uni's wouldn't get to pick the best. Everyone should be encouraged within reason to follow their chosen path, be it midwifery or something else. This is an alien way of attracting students and never experienced this with my first degree. Perhaps it wasn't as popular, who knows. To put people off doing an access course seems unreasonable because not everyone will complete it and only those that really want to follow their path of midwifery will stick at it as there is no other route into midwifery from a college. If midwifery is for you then it is up to you to put a really strong case across. I know the job situation is difficult at present but there will be a need for new midwives as others leave and retire. I was very focussed on what I wanted and nursing was not for me and I wouldn't consider nursing first as I don't want to be a nurse. I am far too old to do a three year nursing degree and then a 18 month coversion if it still existed after the nursing degree. After all the negativity,I did get two interviews at the two Uni's I applied to and two offers. It is possible and you have to believe in yourself and convince your college that you are their candidate. The only other thing I would suggest is to look at the university list on here and to speak to the Uni/s you would like to apply to and find out what other access course they would accept other than the college one. It might be that they will accept an OU or other distance learning qualification. Everyone on this forum I'm sure will give you lots of support and advice. Best of luck to you lassie!

| The day before my interview for uni, one of the girls on my access course said 'you're not doing nursing first, then?' I said 'no, I don't want to be a nurse' she said 'ooh, well they prefer that you know' I was a bit more meek then, this course rubs off on you, you know. So said nothing but was quite upset. Our college tutors had spent ages trying to prepare us for not getting in. five of us applied and we all made it (they had never had everyone being successful before) I have said this before too...when I went to get a prospectus at uni, I was told by the receptionsit, not to bother, that applicant numbers were huge for very few places and it was extremely competitive. I thought I would try my best and here I am (I do sometimes think they made a mistake and will come and find me out sometimes though!)
