Good article. Indies I think get a rough time though, with no support from the government and midwifery institutions. It is proven they are the gold standard for maternity care, sadly that means women have to pay and perhaps the 'socio-economic group' that needs this model of midwifery care most of all are not the ones it is accessible for.

It's a pity this cannot be supported in the UK as it is in NZ, with independent midwives attached to their hospitals.

Very sad, and time is running out, campaigning doesn't seem to be doing anything and time is running out. What a pity..

A midwife who used to work with me emigrated to NZ last year. She's hospital based. She's feeling very disillusioned, because the independent midwives come in and give the care during labour. She feels like a maternity nurse and says that her skills are not being utilised.

- Just another point of view.

I think that is the downfall of working in some hospitals in New Zealand, core midwives are relegated to secondary and tertiary care. In a way this ensures that women do have continuity of carer and the core is there for clinical back-up.

It does make me feel cautious, when people say that Independent Midwifery is the future. I think there is a place for both.
