I agree, it can be very stressful for the mother. But, from what you said it sounded like you were in a "baby rescue" type situation, where your baby needed the help and therefore your desire for a relaxed atmosphere had to come second.

Was your baby born soon after this happened?

I recently experienced a (first) Shoulder Dystocia, and believe you me when that emergency bell is pulled it means the help is needed, I was amazed at the instant response and knowledge by those who responded of what to do in that situation, the woman and baby's wellbeing came before comfort, and there certainly is no place for comfort for the poor woman in that situation. Very overwhelming experience for me.

In the trust I am in at the moment, it is usual for attending midwife to buzz in a second when head is crowning to give syntometrine (with anterior shoulder of course) and 'take' baby.

That's what used to happen where I trained. On reflection, I don't think it's a good idea. Not sure of the rationale behind the practice...?

Interesting...My very first witness this happened and was trust protocol. I moved trusts when a place became free nearer to home. Now generally we give it at some point when we can often after baby is delivered and dried and all is well, then we clamp and cut then give syntometrine.

It's very interesting the different ways things are done, sometimes it's tough as a student if you are always working with different midwives, but it is certainly good to learn there are lots of ways of doing things

Where I work, if everything is straightforward we have one midwife in the room for a birth, but as an RM you can call another if you want to. I have called in a second midwife twice since I qualified, once as I knew there was a big baby coming and the delivery of the head was reaaalllyy slow and I wasn't happy with the colour, and a second time I wasn't happy with the FH. Both times everything was fine.

I imagine you find that quite hard Freefall, considering what you said on previous thread about your thoughts on your son and delayed clamping of the cord?
