Is this because you have a health problem (eg diabetes), or do you just feel a bit shakey etc. when you've not eaten for while?

If you have a medical need, then I am sure you should be able to sort something out with your managers. Occupational Health would probably be the best people to approach.

Then, I'm sure you have a right to have meal breaks etc. I should push for this, before you start your placement.

I find that a small 'fun size' box of raisins in your pocket can help. Or a banana with a cup of tea/coffee at any time. A box of nuts/seeds that you can dip into every now and then is useful too. Sometimes you just have to take 10 mins to look after yourself. If you are feeling wobbly from not eating, you are in no fit state to care for someone else.
Even if its just a pack of glucose sweets in your pocket (especially when you are stuck in theatre or recovery) can be useful as a temporary measure.

That sounds like a good idea, I will have a look for these when I go shopping.

Thanks KS. x

I work as a ward clerk and most of the time I'm actually based on the postnatal ward and I sit at the nurses station in the middle of the ward - strictly speaking we're not allowed drinks/food at the desk which I fully understand - however, it also depends on who is on charge on the particular shift you are working - there is 1 particular M/W who is a stickler but others are more flexible and you can have a cup of tea/drink of water at your desk. I do find it hard though because if I get very hungry my blood sugar levels drop and I get very shaky/hot/clammy.

Lipton Lemon tea works wonders digestion wise. I used to get bloated on nights but now im fine. I do take a herbal water balancer as well now.

I worry about this too as I often get 'the shakes'. I can get it a couple of hours after eating and if I don't do anything about it, I feel light headed, my legs feel weak, my vision goes weired. It's like I'm a wee bit drunk if that makes any sense???

It always goes if I have a sweet coffee/pop/sweeties etc but that does me no good at all

I almost crashed once on my way home from uni as I felt like this. I checked my mirror to go round a car but as my reactions were slow by the time I looked infront again, I was almost in the car boot!!!!! Very scary!
