Default Energy levels

When you are on a shift that is so busy you hardly have chance to grab a drink, let alone eat something, how do you manage to maintain your energy levels?

I have been on a couple of really busy shifts like that, and have finished up so drained and worn out as my blood sugar levels have droppped too low. I am not really sure how to prevent this, but still do what I have to do?

Simple answer - adrenaline! Then make sure you eat and drink plenty once the shift is over.

I certainly have high levels of adrenaline at the end of the shift lol. I think I will start taking a couple of things with me for when this happens to have on the bus home, then have something to eat when I get in. It is harder when it is a late shift, as I don't want to eat too much before bed and lay awake all night.

I was commenting to Lotus Eater, on her blog, that my diet is not good when I'm working shifts. It is simply a case of getting a quick snack & drink when you can, on the busy shifts. I've taken to having a glass of water in the room with me, when I'm on delivery suite.

It's not good for the digestive system though!

No it isn't, and as we aren't allowed any food or drink at the midwive's station, it isn't even possible to grab something from there as you are passing.

I agree that that is a nuisance, but it doesn't look very professional to see staff eating and drinking at the station.

We are allowed a drink at the station, when it is very busy.

I've known many people who develop some sort of digestive problems once on the course. I'd suggest trying to avoid stuff like pro-plus and high sweetener content and go for complex carb and pure protein. I avoided yeasty wheaty stuff cos it gave me a bubbly tummy.

I agree it doesn't look very professional Shishana.

I was thinking along the lines of one of those Nutri Grain bars and a packet of crisp LE, just something to have on the way home that I can put in my bag as it takes me an hour to get home.

This is one thing I really am worried about. It'd make me ill if I didn't keep my sugars up... surely a bottle of lucozade at the station is ok???

I have been told we can't do that, everything has to be kept in the staff room/kitchen.
