We use IUFD at my placement.

I know having a c section is a major op, however i do feel for some women this should be an option. I have not experienced it us of yet tho. So maybe my thoughts would change.

IUD is the term used at Brighton too. Actually, most women who have the awful situation of carrying an IUD do deliver vaginally at Brighton. I was told that this was obviously safer for the women, much more private (just a midwife, not a theater team), can bring 'closure' more easily and mainly so that the women and their families can leave hospital pretty quickly. If they have had a c-section then it's at least a 24-48 hour stay on postnatal ward - not great given the circumstances. I have seen quite a few thank you cards to the midwives for helping to make a dreadful experience more bearable by having peace and quiet, low lights, no intrusion etc. Still a crap situation tho' whatever way.

Also, evidence to date suggests that CS may increase the risk of IUFD, so women who have already suffered one may want to avoid CS for that reason.

That is a very good point wannabemidwife,

Thanks for sharing that, put that way it does seem to be the better option for them, and anything that can help them at such a sad time has to be good.

You're welcome! Actually, in the time I've been MCA'ing, there was one woman who delivered her IUD baby, then was back a year later to deliver her healthy, term baby. I remember her saying that it was due to her really positive experience of having her IUD baby that gave her the courage to try again so soon. She said that not only was it the care she was given, but also the fact that she had laboured and given birth vaginally meant that she knew she had the strength to cope again, as she had coped with that. When I wrote my personal statement for uni, I referred to women/ midwives/ situations that had inspired me... I was really referring to her, and the midwife that had provided her care - if I can reach that level when I train then I'll be proud! x

That is a really positive experience, and that lady must have had a very caring midwife looking after her. I am pleased she had a healthy baby after her really sad time.

I feel the same, and hope I can be that way when I am faced with this situation.

My understanding echos the same as what D and wannabe have said, clinical and emotional reasons - both obviously very important. My unit uses IUD and it really confused me the first time I saw it on the board, they write it in red.
