Default IUD delivery

I feel like I am taking over here today, but have been wondering about this question since I started on delivery suite.

When a woman has suffered an IUD, why does she usually have to endure a vaginal delivery of the baby, rather than being offered the choice of an elective section? Is an elective section even offered to her as an option?

I haven't had to deal with this yet, and am just curious to know why this happens.

Is it because a C-section is classed as a major operation?
That it is preferable to have vaginal delivery because the recovery after a C-section is longer
I am talking from a lay-mans point of view of course so it could be that i am way off the mark.....

Hiya,

Partly because of the impact that a caesarean section has on her future childbearing, and partly because of the psychological 'closure' gained from giving birth to the baby vaginally

Hiya Dory,

I understand now, I knew there would be good reasons for it, but couldn't work out what they were. Thanks. xx

They were also good points too Angela. Thanks xx

Caesarean section has higher rate of maternal morbidity and mortality than vaginal birth. Therefore, the only medical justification for CS is when CS will produce a better outcome than vaginal birth for the baby. If there is no benefit to the baby (i.e. baby is already dead) there can be no justification for increased maternal morbidity/risk of maternal mortality associated with CS.

Does anyone feel that the use of I-U-D is too open for confusion?
Before I started a IUD was a form of contraception.

IUFD (Intrauterine Fetal Death) is often used instead.

Yes I got awfully confused with the term IUD... I was under the impression and IUD was a contraceptive coil.......... hmmm
