| How many hours are you required to work per week on placement? How are they usually worked out? Do you get to bank hours lost through lack of breaks? Which shifts do you prefer?

| On placement I have to do 37.5 hours a week. These are usually done as two early shifts 7:30am - 2:30pm, and three late shifts 1:30 pm - 9:30pm, or three early shifts (one finishing later at 4pm) and 2 late shifts. I don't get to bank hours lost through not having a break. I prefer earlies as I get to have more of the day to myself then.

| 37.5 hours, we don't get to bank breaks, I have been late a few times and use these though.. I prefer long days, they start at 7.30 am and finish 8.30 pm Though they are long, you often get to see a woman through her labour and we only need to three a week for our hours. Nights are ok, but we have to make an hour up for each one, plus I 'd rather be asleep!

| Hi I'm in my first year and we have to do 200 hours for each placement which lasts eight weeks. We do 3 placements in first year so 600 hours in total. We have to roughly do about 25 hours on placement and usually do the shifts our monetors do. In the 2nd and 3rd year we do more hours on placement. 2nd yr is 216 hours which is about 27 hours each week and in 3rd yr we do between 210 and 306 hours which amounts to about 30 to 34 hours a week. Ours doesn't seem to bad as when your on placement you probably get more hours at home than when we are in uni. xxx

| I don't "bank" missed breaks etc.. but will go home if its quiet and I haven't had an earlier break so I suppose its swings and roundabouts really. I usually do 7.5 hours uni, then get a study day so another 7.5 so have to do 22.5 hours in placement so I do a 12 hour and a 10.5 so I get 2 days off to study (shopping housework etc..) but it works better for me for childcare in the mornings. Most mentors are really good and try to ensure you get a break but they often presume you have had one when you haven't your better off giving them a gentle reminder that your starving etc ..

| We have had 375 hours each semester in the first year, which works out for each placement to be around 37.5 hours a week. Unfortunately, I have to follow my mentor's shift pattern which is 3 long days a week - 07:20 - 21:20 (classed as 13.5 hours), so VERY long days. Or I have to do nights, which are classed as 10.5 hours. We are allowed 5 study days per semester out of placement, classed as 7.5 hours each, which are really valuable when you have several long days/nights in a row and need to get some study done or if there's a seminar/study day going on that you wish to attend. Must admit, i have only actually done one early shift this placement - 07:20 - 15:30 and it was rather nice. I'm not keen on lates (13:20 - 21:20), but then I never was in my old job - I always feel like I'm waiting to go to work until It's time to go. However, the long days are good as they get all your hours out of the way at once and you get to be with one woman throughout usually - sometimes even two!
