I agree with you Agatha. The situation you describe is not good practice.
I think it's very easy for midwives to loose sight of how significant the day is for the woman, when we see labouring women and births as a day-to-day event in our jobs. I don't think it's unreasonable for the midwives to want to chat to each other, but just not in the presence of the woman who is concentrating on her body and the intensity of labour. - Perhaps they could have had their chat in the kitchen, whilst making a cup of tea, for example.
