OMG how terrible, i am so glad they don't do things like this in our culture. What effect does it have on the childbirth process?

It's awful, before the woman gives birth she has to be cut back open to allow for baby to pass through, once she has had the baby she is stitched right back up again. It is so awful:-( unneccessary pain and blood to add to an already painful and bloody child birth in countries which have no medical help. Increased risk of death to the mother and baby. Really is shocking x

As far as I am aware it is not legal in this country but in countries where it is practiced regularly it is completely normal and women are seen as dirty and it is thought the women sleep around a lot if they don't have it done, so therefore it is next to impossible for their daughters to be married off, which is why it is forced upon them at such a young age.

It was really good! I sobbed throughout most of it but it was very enlightening; those poor children, there was one girl who was screaming crying as she didn't want it done, having seen her sister go through it just before her. Heartbreaking stuff... Will see if it's on again

I've found it, you have to download 4od (a pain but I do use it a lot) and you can delete when you've finished it

Here is the link - http://www.channel4.com/4od/index.html

and in the search box search for the title "The Day I Will Never Forget" and enjoy!

I'm just going to watch it now x

I couldn't watch that programme, caught about 20mins of it, the part which K has mentioned with the sisters, and it made me sick to my stomach. I think it's an awful thing, but cannot judge because I dont know enough about the religion/culture it is part of. I know that I would be shocked and saddened if I ever came across it.
Has anyone seen a woman who has had it done?

Yeah but it wasn't too bad (type 2). Woman seemed happy with it and was very open.

I have saw 2, one in community and it was just a normal antenatal exam and the other one was in hospital. When I had to do a VE I was initially quite apprehensive as it's all so new to me but like I say she wasn't too bad, looked normal enough, honestly wouldn't have known if it wasn't in her notes.
