Default Journals and databases

Does anyone else struggle to find relevant journals and databases online or is it just me

I hate having to use them, but I have no choice as I have to include them in my assignment.

Whatever I search for and however I limit my search, it always comes up with stuff that is useless

I have a tutorial next week and need to get something down on paper by then, so far all I have got is an essay plan as I can't get the information I need to include

I just wish they would them.

Pauline

Hey midwifemissy. I know, it's very frustrating doing literature searches.
Which databases are you using? I always find Cinahl and Ebsco host useful, also sciencedirect and the cochrane library. You have to keep using all sorts of different search terms to get the right one , and I always sort the results by 'relevance' instead of 'date'. Also, once you have found one article, look at the references and check those articles out. Sometimes you can just google these ones and access them this way.

What are you researching and what terms have you been using?

Hiya,

I have been searching cinhal, and some others I can't remember the name of

I am trying to find articles relating to gender, social class and poverty. I limited the search to english, and years 2000 - 2007, but it still brought articles up from different countries which weren't even relevant to what I wanted.

It is for my inequalities in health assignment, and it is driving me mad

Hmm. tough one. These terms are springing to mind, but I am sure there'll be thousands more:
Social inclusion
Social exclusion
marginalisation / marginalization
inequality AND health
inequalities AND health
(did you know that for examples like the two above, where the ending of inequality/ies varies but basically means the same thing, you can put an asterix at the end, to get all possible variants o.e. inequal*

Will try and think of some more search terms whilst my brain is working. It's just getting that right combination of terms, and bingo.... you should get what you're looking for.

Check out the social inclusion unit website. http://www.socialinclusion.org.uk/home/index.php

Also, here are some of the references I used for my social inclusion assignment (assume it goes along the same idea, although mine was about marginalising pregnant teenagers)
Acheson, D. (1998) Independent Inquiry into Inequalities in Health. Norwich: Stationery Office.
Better Regulation Taskforce. (2000) Protecting Vulnerable People. London: Cabinet Office.

Flaskerud, J. & Winslow, B. (1998) Conceptualizing vulnerable populations: Health-related research. Nursing Research. Vol.47 (2) pp.69-77

Vasas, E. (2005) Examining the margins: A concept analysis of marginalization. Advances in Nursing Sciences. Vol.28 (3) pp.194-202.

Well, I hope it works. It is hard though, and it doesn't really get much easier as time goes on. I'm starting to do my literature search for my assignment. Am reconsidering my topic because I can't seem to find anything relevant to my learning outcomes.

That is the problem I have been having, it is so annoying, I could have written the damn assignment by now if I didn't have to search to find stuff to include.

Good luck with your search, hope you find what you need.

Hi Pauline,

One of the best ways to find releveant references is to find one or two articles (a good place to start with this is the practising midwife in the library) and to go through the reference list at the end of the article. You can usually get the gist of what the article referred to is about by reading the original article.

Thats what I do,get an article thats similar and go find the refs' I also like using google scholar, it will gives you several options of links and if your uni subscribes to the onlines then thats great, I also like using MIDIRS (you have to be subscribed though) and my fave is sciencedirect, as you can search easily throughout various journals for that search term, good luck with it all
