Default Alcohol and breastfeeding

Hi all

We all know the risks of alcohol in pregnancy but I was wondering if anyone could tell me the risks to baby of alcohol in breastmilk?

Reason I ask, I was out with my friend last night who got drunk but is breastfeeding! She did breastfeed when she arrived home after. I couldn't help but wonder if it is going to pass into the milk.

Not sure about that but in my experience she will probably have to deal with yucky nappies afterwards!! so it's not always worth the fun on the night before.........

I know my friend had three pints of guinness and went off drinking that after changing her son's nappy the next day - pooey!

This link has some quite sensible advice in it, but not sure how its evidenced, so take it with a pinch of salt:

Hi there
I am still breastfeeding my little boy, but I don't drink very heavily anyway. A glass of wine or two has no affect on him, but then he is not tiny any more! Sniff! I am such a lightweight I find it has more of an affect on me! I did find if I drunk too many cups of tea/coffee when I was b.f Chloe that it would make her agigated and grumpy!!

Kellymom has some info on it - a bit American but still useful: http://www.kellymom.com/health/lifestyle/alcohol.html

Main point being: "
In general, if you are sober enough to drive, you are sober enough to breastfeed. Less than 2% of the alcohol consumed by the mother reaches her blood and milk. Alcohol peaks in mom's blood and milk approximately 1/2-1 hour after drinking (but there is considerable variation from person to person, depending upon how much food was eaten in the same time period, mom's body weight and percentage of body fat, etc.). Alcohol does not accumulate in breastmilk, but leaves the milk as it leaves the blood; so when your blood alcohol levels are back down, so are your milk alcohol levels."

This is also very informative: http://www.breastfeedingnetwork.org....astfeeding.pdf
