Question Lotus births

I was wondering on folks thoughts and feelings about Lotus births, has anyone seen one, or has any women requested one, what was the outcome? Were they allowed, humoured or denied?

lotus birth, or Umbilical Nonseverance, is the practice of leaving the umbilical cord unclamped and intact following birth, rather than intervening upon the normal physiological process of Wharton's jelly changes which produce a natural internal clamping within 10-20 minutes postpartum. The umbilical cord then dries and eventually detaches from the umbilicus. Detachment generally occurs 2-3 days after birth.

Just copied this off wikipedia, still doesnt really help ??

I'll try to put it more simply than wikipedia.........

Usually the umbilical cord is clamped and cut, leaving a 'stump' with a clip on the baby - this drops off after a week or so. The placenta is then delivered and disposed of.

In a lotus birth, the cord is not cut at all, which means the baby, cord and placenta are all together until the cord dries and detaches itself naturally. The stories I've read about it say that the mums carry the placenta in a little bag or wrapped in a nappy!

Not sure what it's like in hot weather - phew!

I understand now. I think it's better to clamp and cut haven't seen or heard of the other method (until today).

I would personally rather not clamp and cut straight away, but I wouldn't have a lotus birth either. If I had more I would insist on cord cut after it has stopped pulsating. But that is as far as I would go, don't fancy taking the placenta home with me.

I have heard of a couple of people having lotus births, but have never seen it at my unit. From my experience anyone asking for a physiological third stage is deemed a pain in the arse. I was totally shocked by that attitude.

The placenta is rubbed with salt several times a day to cause drying and to prevent decomposition and the smell!
The placenta is kept in a cotton bag until it naturally separates from the baby.
I have no negative feelings towards this practise but am unsure what the benefit is for the baby or the mother.
Can anyone think of any benefit to this practise? (OMG can't remember how to spell practise/practice - help)
