Unhappy Bad reviews - to buy or not to buy??

I was just about to purchase te Oxford handbook for midwives earlier today from amazon through the link on this site. I decided to look at the reviews before i purchased and read a realy bad review which has put me off buying it. The review was that 'apparentley' on page 448 (i think) there is a miss print or wrong information regarding the dosage of something (it is stated as 4mg IV but should be 4g according to the 'reviewer') is this correct because now i don't want to buy the book incase i learn from it and kill someone with a wrong dose or something!!! Can anyone enlighten me or help me decide whether i should buy it!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

I can't find this in my book, and can't get it to come up via the shop. If you can find the right page I will have a look.

I really like the book, and find it very useful if that hepls?

I think they recalled some of the earlier prints due to an error in printing.

If you want to get it, why not buy it through the trading post? There is a copy for sale, it should be cheaper than Amazon, and you are helping out a fellow smneter as well!

I have it and think it's really useful for placement as it's small enough to fit in your bag and take with you. Also i wouldn't worry about the error. By the time you are qualified to do iv drug administration, you wouldnt be using the handbook as a point of reference. You would be using local guidelines and procedures, additionally all drugs get checked by a second midwife to ensure problems are picked up (hopefully?!)

hth?

There is no dosage instuctions on that page in mine. My copy is 2006, the most recent I think.

I love mine, but I would never use the book as gospol for dosage instructions anyway. I would alsways check with the trust that i work at

Have just checked and the error is meant to be on page 433 and is reffering to eclampsia, stating you should give a loading dose of magnesium sulphate at 4mg instead of 4g, see if any of you can find it. xx

I have found this error and you are correct. It is an error, but that doesn't mean the book is rubbish.

I have found errors in many books I have read over the years. I proof read all my essays and get my OH to proof read them too, yet I still end up with some mistakes that get through unnoticed.

I'm sure that is the case here. The book is very good for students and if you need to administer drugs, you wouldn't rely on a book like this, you would check in the BNF and with your Trusts protocols.
