I have eczema on my hands AND carry the cold sores virus (haven't had one for a few years though). I'm in my second year, and no one's kicked me out yet! I also have a mentor who has chronic eczema, and it's never stopped her.

Perhaps the reason they mention the eczema in particular is because it WILL be exacerbated by the handwashing. For anyone who has the same problem, my recommendation (and I got this from Occy health) is to only use alcogel in absolute emergencies, and to wash your hands in cold water, rather than warm. In my first my hands were so bad they made me cry, but these little differences have made the world to me.

As for the cold sores, I'm sure it would only be if you were having chronic outbreaks, and then I still don't understand why... is there any reason other than mouth-to-mouth when your gob would come into contact with a patient's??? I'm sure they'd forgive you a cold sore if you were trying to save their life!!!

I didn't mean to frighten you honey!! Perhaps we were getting the tough messages!! I think she meant that if we actually had a coldsore then we wouldn't be looking after patients as it doesn't look very nice and with the hands she had mentioned that someone had to leave the course because they had weeping wounds on their hands!! There are so many things you can do to lessen both conditions and especially if you do suffer, you'll be able to take remedial action before it becomes a problem.

Really sorry for making you panic.

Ok coffeebean i was just being over the top, as per usual !!

I m just really worried that something will stop me !!

My hands are ok as long as i keep an eye on them (he he sorry !) i need to use cream every now and then.

In the past i have had the weeping sores and admit that it doesnt look very nice.

As for coldsores i ( again ) am just worrying .

Its just that with people saying about the threat to new born babies and then both things being on the occy health form (which is for work on the mat unit )

I was letting things get to me !!

Thanks to you for replying and calming me down a bit.

Just relax honey!! I have got some great tips about hands because even though I don't have exzema on my hands they can get pretty dry and rough after lots of hand washing but tips like wetting your hands before applying the soap and using tepid water are all things that will help maintian your hands. As for your cold sores if you make sure you eat well, take vits and treat as soon as you get the tingle then I'm sure you will manage. We are all in for a shock when we start and I think that we will all have to be careful to pace ourselves but to also try to ensure that we eat well, rest and drink plenty (of water!!)
