Question coldsores

i just wanted to know if any midwifes have heard or been taught about the coldsore virus being dangerous to newborn babies. i dont only mean the genital herpes but just normal coldsores on the lips (face) its just i have been on facebook tonight and someone sent me a group to join, its about a woman who developed a coldsore days after having her baby, the coldsore only lasted a day and she thought no more of it but when the baby was 8 days old she become lifeless and the doctors had no idea why and the baby died. they found that the baby had the herpes simplex virus 1 which killed her. apparently this is very rare in the uk and only 6 babies a year die from this. obviously there are no syptoms for the babies so its so hard to diagnose but is this something you learn with your training and as many mums get very run down after giving birth and do get cold sores do you get worried for the baby? i know genital herpes is very dangerous for a baby being born but not a common coldsore as im sure ive had a coldsore when my babies were born! and all mums kiss their babys all over the face and lips although you shouldnt but its just naturel. has anyone come across this a midwife?

I've never heard of babies dying from this.

So what happens if we suffer from coldsores ( as i do ) ???

Are we not allowed to work or something ???

I had this facebook link a while ago, I spoke to one of the midwives at work about it and apparently it's very rare but can cause problems if the Mum gets a coldsore for the 1st time after delivery as there is no immunity passed on - I'll see if I can find a link about it as this all sounds a bit vague LOL

Found this

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/72023.php

It explains that it's the simplex 2 strain of the virus, rather than the simplex 1 which is your usual coldsore than can cause infant death.

I am sure we were told at an Open Day ( after an offer) that if you suffered from ezema on your hands that you would probably not get through the three years and that if you had cold sores that you wouldn't be able to be near patients.
