Hi

I was due to start uni in Oct 3 yr degree. I found out I was pregnant as well only a week ago. It was a shock but I was the same as you (couldn't go through with TOP). So anyway, I spoke to the uni and have been defered but I can't help but panic about doing a 3 year degree with one 7 year old, 2 year old and baby. I know how you feel. I am confused but my mind is very hormonal now anyway lol.

I hope you make the decision thats best for you.

Hi Kitten
how reassuring to find someone in the same boat....
Do you mind me asking if you have a partner how he feels about it all?

I'm only 6/40 pg and 'logically' in my mind I think I should have a TOP but in my heart I just cant...

There's just so much to think about isnt there?
All I can say is the training is fab - very hard work but then I guess we'd expect that - and although I've had a few days where I've wanted to jack it in, overall I LOVE it.....

Have had 4 catches including 2 home births :-)
keep in touch. x

June this may be a silly q but why wouldn't you get a bursary? Now that there are no diploma's don't all degree courses attract bursaries? I'm getting a bursary and I'll be doing a degree.

Also, won't you get more tax credits? I know it's not an awful lot but every little helps!

Hi June

I'm the same as you 6+1 wks. I know it sounds logical to not go ahead with it. I was in the same boat but I've always said that I wouldn't be able to do that. Especially as I have the other two.

My partner is really supportive. He always said do what suits me but initially he suggested TOP so I could complete my career dream. He realised I could defer and then we decided to do that instead. Bless him though, I had hyperemesis with both my previous preg so he is preparing himself.

I think you should be ok with a bursery but you could always call up and check. Also once you start the course can you take maybe 2 years out and get a job to save money as long as the course is completed within 5 years (I've heard but not 100%). That may affect your bursery though and you probely wouldn't save much cos childcare is so expensive.

P.S. Just changed my status to 'MUM TO BE' ahhhh lol.

Congratulations, June and Kitten!

As an aside, OllyBolly, I'm on a diploma and its a 3 year course - not sure about anyone else...

I hadn't even thought about the implications of maternity leave and rejoining the course as far as the degree / diploma shenanigans are concerned - now I'm all of a kerfuffle! I would have hoped (that's me, there, with a half full glass) that there would be little difference to the kind of support you would get between the degree and diploma, and that with another little one you might expect a slightly higher level of support? Is that just too much to ask?

Is there someone you can talk this through with? I'm not sure what is most appropriate, be it personal tutor, NHS funding or what?

Whatever happens, I wish you all the best xxx

thanks for letting me know. Really didn't realise they ran over 3 years. Thought it was standard 2 year diploma, or 3 year degree. Is your institution have a diploma intake in september?

That's exciting and coincidental!! I agree totally. Because I already have 3 lovely children though I'm kindof worried that I wont strike so lucky again. Have in the back of my mind that I could miscarry - I really dont want to as I'm now emotionally attached - but if that happens and the decision was taken out of my hands that would be different than having an abortion.

I'm glad your partner is supportive - we need that! Hope this time the sickness isnt so bad....
Are you working/ studying at the moment?
I'm on the last couple of weeks of placement in the community and its tough going I have to say as I'm so nauseous in the mornings this week and sensitive to smell.... I'm hoping to be able to complete the placement as I dont want to have hours to make up. Then we've got an exam in 2 weeks that I havent had chance to revise for as I'm so tired in the evenings........

The situation with the bursary when I looked into it last year is that only diploma students get a non means tested bursary and my OH earned 'too much' for us to qualify for any extra benefits - like childcare allowance. The degree bursary is completely means tested and I think there's a possibility of a loan (which I want to avoid if poss). Its just that we'd budgeted against the income of a diploma bursary (and me doing PT work which I had to stop recently in order to concentrate on the course anyway)

I may end up taking 2 years off, but in some ways I'd quite like to get back in to it so that my skills I've developed dont rust.......

Thanks NikkiBunny.
The tutor I saw this week is a senior tutor at uni although not my personal tutor. I will try to see her in a week or two when she's back from hols.

Congratulations to you too June and thanks nikkibunny.

June, I worry about miscarriage also as I have had 2 healthy preg and can't help but think it could be likely. I haven't been sick yet which is strange so I hope I may get away with it this time. I have felt a bit nauseous in the afternoons.

I am working but only part-time and I'm off til next week. I agree that you'd want to get back to the course as your brain can turn to mush. I'm thinking of doing a course to help keep mine active to make the degree a bit easier after baby comes.
