Question Labour starting?........

Someone i know is due to give birth in 3/4 weeks. Although she thought i was wrong........ it sounds to me like something might be happening (however i am not a student or midwife so...).

Her symptoms are:

Really reduced movement over the last 3 days
Diarrheoa
Back ache
Period pain
2 good nite's sleep?!
Lots of discharge

Head is only 2/5ths and midwife is not convinced and baby is fine so she's not bothered What do you think though, as i told her i'm sure some of these symptoms are labour starting?!!!

Also she doesn't know what she's having and we wondered if these rumours are true:

High bump means a boy, low bump a girl?
Higher than 140 heart rate is a girl?
Second labours don't have a real build up of contractions, they start quite strong?
Head doesn't ebgage until labour begins?

I was going to try and give her some answers to these myths so would love your help.

Thanks

xx

I'm not a student midwife yet but I think these symptoms are not signs of labour but maybe signs that it may happen soon. (or could just be a tummy upset?)

My second labour had a very slow build up of mild contractions, well over 24 hours but then baby was back to back which apparently does result in slower labour. (that's what they said at the time).

I think it's just myths about the boy/girl ones.

It does sound like she's getting going, yes! If she has reduced fetal movements she really should get in touch with her midwife, though - can you encourage her to?

Hi Goosy, Im new to the site,

I have to agree with Bunny, If your friend has got reduced movements then she really should get it checked out. The other things could be signs of labour starting but on the other hand they could have other meanings so it is best to encourage her to go and get checked out.

You'll have to keep us posted on how she's doing xx

Hiya - yeah some of the signs could be a sign that things could be starting soon. I know both times I had backache, upset stomach +++, and lots of niggly pains. I do agree that she should contact DS or her M/W just to check out the reduced FM's. 2nd time around my labour pains were more painful when they started but they steadily rose. I had a prolonged latent and 2nd stage 2nd time around
Fingers crossed for your friend - how exciting!!

Yeah i did tell her to get in touch with her midwife, as she woud feel terrible if something was wrong! She didn't take much notice to be honest as she said her midwife said she would know instinctivley if something was wrong! Will keep you updated, sounds like this could be a long 3 weeks for her. xxx
