This is a poll to see how well informed you feel you are.

FGM links to midwifery for obvious reasons, its a womens issue ... womens health, pregnancy and birth. Some argue its a cultural issue and we westerners should not interfere. I feel differenty and feel that awareness must be raised.

Some of you will care for women who have experienced FGM and this can greatly affect their experience of childbirth.

Please list any links to sites, articles etc that you feel may help raise awareness among fellow members.

Ive just written a glossary definition with attached picture of types of FGM. I hope you find this informative.

We touched on this a bit at uni, but not in too much depth at the moment. It is a topic that I need to know more about, and am hoping to learn more about it as I go along.

Haven't come across it in practice yet either.

I have researced it a bit, it's so sad what these poor women and children have to go through for the sake of their culture, has anybody had a lady who has hadthis done?

I heard once that the dad asked for his wife to be re-stitched after the birth?!! How do women act in these situations over here? x x x

I would sooner die than let anyone touch my baby in this way. How can they let their babies go through that? Maybe they are made to do it which I find discusting. When you are old enough to make an informed decision NOT under duress then I am just about OK with it if it's their choice and no one is being forced for any reason.

I've read a few articles, I think they were in MIDIRS, it has never been mnetioned in uni as yet though

So I voted, kind of!

I think it's horrible and unnecessarily cruel and culture or no culture it should be outlawed. There are many cultural practices that I do not understand but would never condemn but FGM IMHO is inexcusable.

I knew a little about it but learned more today. A woman presented in labour who had had it done as a baby. She was very open when talking about about it and tbh if she hadn't told anyone I don't think you would have known so maybe she was a very mild (not the right word) case??
