Good topic and a good thread. We will all have differing opinions on this and what is considered "appropriate". Me personally, I believe that holding a position as a midwife is a responsible job and I believe my conduct should reflect that. Saying that, I like a laugh as much as the next person but I don't and wouldn't be putting myself in positions where my actions could jeopardise my job. But I do think that everyone has the right to their own private life - as long as the two don't overlap!

I think we should behave 'properly' as people never mind midwives!!
Definitions of properly would vary according to age etc. A girl in my cohort thinks its fine to belch really loudly - in my opinion that is foul behaviour. Getting pissed, behaving like an idiot - all great in appropriate company but in public - no.

I think it's extremely hard in regards to sites such as myspace and facebook, where just the other day i was wearing a low cut top on a night out and low and behold the next day there were some snaps that some of my friends have snuck up on me and taken of my cleavage. now since reading about acting 'responsibly' in my spare time, i've been along and deleted the tags of these photos. But what about people who don't know someones posted a photo of them? Sometimes innocent situation can actually look a bit bad on the person involved. For instance i often see photos of people happily sitting on the loo in a pub and someones crept up and taken a photo of them doing a wee from over the door and slapped it on facebook. it's not their fault they're up there, but it looks like they're drunk and disgracing themselves in public! and to remove the photo can often be a long process, and some people may fear causing an upset in their friendship groups by reporting these photos.

i had a friend who joined the police force a couple of years ago and is no longer friends with hardly any of the people she was when she joined. This was all due to her friends not understanding why she couldn't engage in the same activities as them anymore, and also for not respecting her profession and continuing to do silly illegal things: sign stealing, moving traffic cones when drunk, shouting at people in the street etc when she was with them and not understanding the situation this put her in. she would not be allowed to be seen by her force doing these things and it would have been too easy for her to be blamed for 'taking part' in these things, too much of a risk for her new career. So she lost her friends.
