Default Embarassing midwifery moments!

Has anyone got any tales to tell about things they've done on placement that have made you cringe with embarassment!! I'm trying to think back, and my memory must have erased most of the many, many, many cringeworthy moments. My friend was telling me bout in her first year when she was in an ANC, listening into the blood pressure of a woman who happened to be a reg in obstetrics. After deflating the cuff twice and still unable to hear the blood sounds, she suddenly realised that she had forgotten to put the ear pieces of the stethoscope in! Bless her. She was like 'crap, what do I do now!' and subtly tried to put the ear pieces in, but was sure they all noticed, but were too polite to say anything! Another friend was about to wheel a post c-section lady from labour ward to the p/n ward, before realising she plonked the lady down on a commode... she mumbled something about the wheelchair needing fixing, and scarpered to find a proper one!

Also, I remember when I was doing a VE, saying that I could feel bulging membrane, when my mentor promptly reminded me that we had ARM'd her 4 hours ago! oops. lol. Must've been naughty caput. What else... mmm, 'nother time, was racing to run some ringers through and get it on the stand, in a room full of odps, anaesthetists etc, and then dropped it on the floor, soaking everyone! Was not popular that day.

About the only thing I can remember is the first c/section I was in, doctor opened mom and a tiny fist shot out. My eyes got pretty big and I think I said, "Oh cr*p!" cause I just wasn't expecting that. Anyhow, the dad got a little worried thinking my reaction meant something was wrong and I was pretty embarrassed. I was just supposed to be observing and all the other surgeries (in the reg. surgical dept), there was never any family so I forgot about that.

That's pretty funny about the blood pressure story. I could very easily see myself doing something like that....

Oh! another time, I actually got soaked when mom's water broke. We wore very thin white uniforms and it was from my belly down (mom was on side of bed, leaning over me for her epi, doctor had bed raised so I was on a stool sitting in front of mom helping her bow her back). Luckily, they had some extra scrubs on the floor for the OR so I didn't have to walk around showing off my undies. Kinda freak accident, my nurse said she'd never had that happened to her.

Oh, and another time I had mom leaning over me, mom got sick down my back and in my hair. Funny when you throw up during labor, lots of times you don't even know you're going to do it. Only time I've been puked on.

Erm... reaching over to switch on the overbed light for a newly warded post caesarean woman, knowking the whole jug of fresh iced water over the woman and the bed. Not popular.

Or there's the old fave, forgetting to close off the valve when emptying a catheter bag....
