Could it be that this is just a bad placement with a bad mix of staff for you? I had an awful placement during nursing and really comtemplated packing it in, staff where awful and really disliked the politics and the way things ran on this ward, only thing I like was when I was one-on-one with patients and making a difference to them this way. I then heard what my next placement was and cried, it was the one area I really, really , really did not want to go, turned out to be the best one in my training, i did all my makeup time in the end there and also took a job in that area of nursing afterwards. You never know where you are going to be down the line. you are coming to the end of year one, there is no way I would have known where I was going to end up at the end of year 1, you may end up very surprised after experiencing working in different areas.

Good luck with the shift!

Thanks again guys. The shift was good - looked after 2 lovely families - really lovely! My mentors spoke to me about what had been going on - but were really lovely about it all and also really encouraging and said they thought I was great with the women etc (which is the important bit to me!). At the end of the marathon shift the midwives I'd spent the last 4 hours with (as my sensible mentor left at the end of our actual shift!) both said I'd done really well etc - which was great as I don't get much positive feedback - which is hard not to think is a reflection on your practise - I mean I've only had the one really bad experience too - but you know what I mean! So it was just when I needed the boost to my confidence - it came - hoorah!

Also, having not had anything 'normal' since my dodgy shift nearly 3 weeks ago - I had a lovely delivery this morning and delivered my namesake - which was lovely too!! Great stuff!

Really pleased you had such a lovely shift, and delivered your namesake too, that makes it even more special.

Praise tends to come when we need it the most, and it is a great boost to our confidence.

Take this lovely shift and file it away in your memory, then it will be there to open up and re-live anytime you are feeling down or upset after a difficult shift.

Maybe write a reflection too, I always do that so again I can look back at it after a difficult shift.

I always thought of Norman as quite an old-fashioned name...
