I love midwifery because.....it is totally unique, we support, we don’t ‘make better’, the witnesses, the guardians. It is humanity and morality, showing that even when you are at your most scared, your most vulnerable, there will always be someone there to catch you (and your baby). It is raw biology at its’ strongest, and I love it for that moment, as the head emerges, that weird, hushed time as we wait for another human being to enter the world, a person who’s alive, but not quite...there yet. Thats special
I love the mentors that....understand, that know that it’s ok to be scared, and that accept that there are many ways of doing things, everybody is different and that don’t force their methods on you. I also love the ones who make you laugh when all you want to do is cry, who give you a smile in the corridor, and who know that a hug, and a look, speaks so many words. In some ways, they’re all fab, everyone has bad days, most are under pressure but however grudgingly they mentor you, they still take you and teach you. I love the uni staff, a couple in particular because....if it weren’t for them I probably would have given up. I would still be on placement in the back end of nowhere, I would still be beating myself up for being so bewildered in the beginning. I am eternally grateful for them being there with words and a hug when I felt like I had very few people I could turn to at that point. They are all quirky, with their own little ways and fascinating stories, and most of all they don’t mind that they’re different, they don’t mind being controversial. They inspire. And finally I love the women, because even when they are afraid, in pain, alone, unaware they are so awe-inspring-ly strong, and, what could be more incredible than creating another person from within?

Thats the point C, there are some areas where this dark underbelly lives and it needs to be talked about and addressed but we mustnt let it overshadow everything else, which is why I created this thread, theres a billion times more good stuff than bad in midwifery and I want to readjust that focus to the REAL midwifery not the small element that some like to peddle.
