Theres been alot of anti midwifery press latley and I want to adjust the balance.
Yes there are issues we need to address as a profession but then what collective group doesnt? Heres my sweeping statements! I love midwifery because its about women. We women are amazing. I love being 'with woman' as such a special time in their lives. I love midwives because of their committment. Times are tough and they still give women their all. They work tirelessly, always 'giving' and they teach us as they go. They deal with life and death confidently, always thinking of their client and their baby - they dont freak out and run when things get tough clinically - they stay and manage the situations where others may flee - midwives are there battling for a positive outcome when mother nature has other ideas.... I love my mentors as they have taught me. I have knowledge because of them. I feel like I have been told the secrets of the centuries in many cases, so so much more than any books could teach me. I especially love the ones that 'pushed' me or let me 'off the lead' making me feel I can do this stuff! I love my uni staff as they have always been there for me. I have sung their praises around the site as they really have been rock solid for me. Theres a few of them that I want to be when I grow up I also love the MCAs and HCAs as they always welcomed me, guided me where things were and saved my butt more than a few times when Im having to locate something quickly and I cant find it! Tell me what you love and why....

J you spelt it out why I want to do midwifery. I often think of the midwife who caught my daughter and hold a special plate in my heart for her because she was there at such a special, important, vunerable, exciting, scary, part of my life! I was 12 mins in the hospital when my daughter was born so there wasn't much for her to do but what she did in those few minutes and the hours afterwards will stay with me forever and its why I want to be a midwife.

Great thread J.
I love midwifery because every day is different, no matter which area you work in, it is different. Every woman, partner, family member is different, and all have their own unique needs. I love being able to provide care for them, educate them, and have the privilage to share such a special time with them. I love midwives because like the role, they are all different, they each bring their own particular experiences, skills and knowledge to the area they are working in, and most are only too happy to share them with me. I too feel I have learnt so much from them. I love the mentors I have worked with, each and every one of them has been patient, kind and supportive of my tentative attmepts to try and learn and practice new skills. They have never made me feel like a failure once, and for that I am every grateful. I love my uni lecturers because they gave me the opportunity to fulfill my passion for midwifery. They teach, guide, educate and support me through whatever I need to learn, and always try their best to make it fun. I know they are always there if i need advice or help with anything too. I love the doctors who take the time to make me feel a part of what they are doing, explain things to me, and ask me for help rather than making me feel in the way. I just love this world we call midwifery, it has it's down sides, and sometimes I feel I can't go on anymore, but you know what? I wouoldn't change it for the world!

Midwifery is brilliant, there are so many aspects to it to enjoy. Working with women and their families gives a real sense of purpose...there is so much that can make such a difference to women and often with such little effort, it is often the small things..as a student we can do that right from the start, as technical knowledge is not needed to be kind!
Being a part of a woman's rite of passage whether it is her first or 9th is a definate honour. Even after the worst, most difficult shifts, there is always something to smile about, even though we often forget it. There is always something new to learn, and it is definately one thing I will always remember, evn though we learn so much and so quickly. Every day is different, we don't know what each shift or visit, clinic or phone call may bring, it offers challenges to us as people as women as professionals and as humans, and for that magical euphoric moment there are laways those of terrible tragic sadness too. If emotions were a mountain then midwifery would be at the very summit! The people you meet all bring their own pieces to the huge amazingly fantabulous midwifery cake, with so many tiers! whether they are the grumpiest or the kindest and gentlest, the most knowledgable or the most muddled! Midwifery teaches you an awful lot about yourself (and not always things you like!) but that leanring makes you a better person and ultimately (and hopefully!) a better midwife at the end of it. It shows you waht you can do, how strong you are or how weak, how patient, humorous, honest, humble, or conscientious you are and also how much or little you can cope with beofre the cracks start to show! Midwifery really does rock! Women are truly amazing, there ahve been many, many times when I have been speechless with emotion and admiration for women and how amazing they are, how much they can (and often do) take, (whether they swear or not!!!, another thing you learn) Whether we are there for a postnatal visit and watch that amazing moment when after 3 hours of tears and pain, and following the first three days of crying continously to get the hang of breastfeeding, both mum and baby get it and that smile of joy just gets you right there (and in the throuat whilst trying not to cry) or during labour and you help give women the confidence to do it (even when they know they can, sometimes it helps to hear it) or the hug you get when you sadly say goodbye. Whatever situation, its all brilliant! I love it, all of it, every second (even if I do moan alot) Right, well, that's made me boo, and alot! Thanks for starting this thread, Our J, posting this has made me remember (amidst all of the assignment stress and general fog that is life) why I came into this and just what it means to me

Where there are women, there will always be negativity, bitchiness and gossip however...
I love my Mentors because they have always been supportive and helpful. I love women because they truly are amazing. Pregnancy and birth is a miracle and to see it unfold is awesome. I love my uni lecturers because they teach each cohort the same old stuff, support and guide us through all the wobbly times and have seen the potential in all of us. I love my chosen profession and want to make a difference. Each woman is an individual; to treat them with respect and give them the experience they will carry forward with them is a privilege i can only thank them for. Have just done a night shift and to see the couple really have a good experience, feel the love for their new baby and each other as i send them off to postnatal, is worth feeling totally totally knackered!
