I think that between midwife and mother, it's important that a relationship of perfect trust develop. This is really a unique type of relationship because I know it's not one you make all the time (I know for me, it's hard to just totally trust someone unless I've known them for a VERY long time).

I have not been in the midwife role yet but I have been as a doula which I see in the same way. Lines of communication open up that aren't there in other relationships. Mom trusts you to help her and you trust mom to communicate with you and you trust her abilities. I see it as a very beautiful relationship and feel I'm not explaining very well!

In my opinion as a very new student midwife it is a blend of total trust, honesty, confidentiality, and confidence, all these working together create the very unique bond between the Mum & the midwife.

The following is a testimony by a woman about the special nature of the midwife mother relationship.

"I think trust is very important. The midwife that was there most of the time - I really trusted her and she did make me feel like she was there in the moment and this was a special thing for her too. And I really trusted what she was telling me because she'd listened to what I wanted. So I suppose the trust comes from feeling that you are an important part in the equation".

Trust was seen as crucial… We make women feel like they are important in the equasion by listening to them, supporting them, giving them what they want when this is possible and when this is not, by negotiating with them. This special relationship built on trust, is an intimate one, we are familiar, safe, are welcomed into homes and passed babies to cuddle as if we are family members. It is a unique, beautiful relationship.
