Prefer gin myself-oh and I've developed a liking for real ales-bit random I know I think its because I've exhausted all various choices of alcohol whilst being a student midwife.

My kids cos I'm doing it so they can have a better life cos hopefully I'll be earning a wage at last! The buzz of the job when everything is exciting and new and the relationships that you build up with some fantastic midwives who make me want to be like them! Went to my husbands xmas do on Sat night and we were sat round a table having a meal with 10 people, someone asked what I did and they all thought it were fantastic and then everyone were talking to me about what I do for the next half hour! I were well chuffed that everyone thought it was such a lovely job to be doing and made me feel really proud!

my fantastic baby-catcher friends who are always available for a moan.
The fantastic lecturer's at uni- the majority are always there for an email, a phonecall or a visit at breaking point. they always understand, and the always say the right thing.
Letting my emotions out- usually on the phone to my mom- who keeps me grounded and knows me better than myself sometimes- even when i'm telling her i want to quit!

and, ultimately the knowledge that i have the strength to get through, a passion for it all, and a knowledge that the highs will always, always beat the lows.......

I've had a number of low points (and lots of highs too), in my career as a midwife.

So, what keeps me going:

Remembering that I'm doing this job to help women. It's not an ego trip. We all make mistakes and so long as we learn from them, then that's ok.

My hubbie has a wonderful shoulder to cry on! He's been there for me, all through my training and now into my career.

Talking with other midwives, who understand the circumstances of a given situation. In very tricky situations it is my Supervisor who I turn to.

Writing down my thoughts and feelings.

I cannot underestimate how important my faith is. I feel sure that midwifery is the career I have been "called" to. I know that I am never alone. I pray often - at home, in the car, at work, even when a woman is pushing and nothing is happening I'll shoot up a silent quick prayer "Come on Lord, help this woman."

More recently, this web site has been great! I'm so glad I found you lot.
