Default Totally confused by this drugs calculation...

Could someone please help me?!

I am sooo confused by one of the questions . . . I have the answer (400ml) but no matter what i try i can't work it out

The question is:

A patient is to be given 1000ml by IVI using a controller with a drip factor of 15 drops/ml. The infusions starts at 8.00am and every 4 hours the patient is given 1 hour rest. If the drip rate was set at 25 drops per minute how much liquid would be left at 3.00pm?

If anyone knows how to work it out i would be eternally grateful if you could explain it to me!!

Thanks in Advance!

xx

Right i haven't started uni yet so don't know if i'm going about this all wrong, but i worked it out like this:

1000ml x15 = 15,000 drops total in the IV
25 drops per minute x 60 minutes = 1,500 drops per hour
The patient is given 4 hours worth betwen 8am and 12pm and then another 2 hours worth between 1pm and 3pm = a total given of 9,000 drops. To convert back to ml divide by the drip factor of 15 and you get 600ml used, leaving 400ml in the IV.

OK, multiply 25 drips per minute by 60 to get the amount of drops per hour which is 1500.

Every 15drops is 1ml of liquid, therefore 1500 drops is 100mls of liquid.

For every active hour the patient is getting 100mls of liquid. As there are 6 active hours of IVI 600mls is given to the patient leaving 400mls of liquid remaining.

6 hours being calculated by 8am-9am. 9am-10am, 10am-11am 11am-12pm Then a 1 hour break from 12pm-1pm. Then again 1pm-2pm, 2pm-3pm.

Does that make sense?
