Hi

I am hoping to become a student midwife inthe future but unfortunately do not have the required science element to get straight onto the course, It was recommended that rather than do a biology A level i would get more benefit out of an access to higher education course.

I would love to do this from home as i have two young children and would still be able to do my part time job. The only company I can find who offers this is the distance learning centre has anyone used them to do their access course, if so how did you find them and have you managed to secure a student midwife place using the qualification.

Feedback on the course both good and bad would be much appreciated

Hi there i was going to do this course, i downloaded the course content and emailed it to the uni's that i was interested in, i got good reviews back that yes they would accept the qualifications, if i past but also advised me to get experience as the course is very competitive. I still have not started the course waiiting to see if i can get into college if not i will then start the course. But good luck with whatever you decide.

I finished the access course in December 07 with DLC. I found the course very easy (maybe a little to easy!) I received 60 credits a mixture of level 2 and level 3. When I emailed Plymouth Uni, they told me that i needed at least 15 credits in a biology and i only got 9 credits and so i needed to top up on the biology they advised me to to a AS human biology. The other Uni's I spoke to were fine with the credits i acheived.
It is a good course and i would recommend it.

Have not heard of an access distance learning course but would have considered it before starting the one i'm doing now. Although i am having and have had a lot of support and encouragement off my tutors and other students completing the same course which is a benefit. Dont think i could do it on my own to be honest!!
But hey, theres loads of us on here doing access courses and they seem to all be different so i'm sure we can all help you and give you ideas and support if you decided to pursue in that way.

Cardiff Student Midwife 2008!!

I'm looking at doing an Access course in science or nursing/healthcare at my local college and hoping this will be ok for uni. The prospectus' all seem to say an Access course is acceptable but I have my concerns, as I'm sure we all do when contemplating University (and this is the second time I am so it's not as if I haven't had experience! It hasn't made it any easier though!!) :-s

I have just started this course and finding it quite easy I'm 24 and been out of the education loop since I was 16. I did go to sixth form college from 16 to 18 but I did a vocational course in drama and so I didnt need to do much written work or essays. The course content is really good introduces all the things that you need to know before starting a degree like how to write an essay the different types etc and how to write up a scientific experiment. I am surprised how quickly its all coming back to me. You get a course tutor that you can email whenever you like and speak to on the phone. All in all its been really good for me. I am a quick learner and sometimes find studying in a class tiresome as I usually move very quickly through things and find myself waiting for everyone else to catch up. With this course you really do go at your own speed.

I'm just starting out on looking into Access courses & stuff, and had just looked at the local college so far - but of course with 2 boys, a fiance & a part time job i was trying to find ways to fit it all in with the times it's on.

But seeing your post about the dlc has got me thinking about doing it from home - so thank you!
