Default Practising Midwife

I've just subscribed (5 minutes ago!) to this journal. I was wondering who else gets it and how you find it helpful, if at all. Did you use the fact you got it in interviews or is it taken as standard that you'd have a subscription to something or other?

I subscribe to it and used to read it alot (before starting the course) I have to admit that now I just flick through it and highlight pages that have interesting or useful articles on.. I did mention in my interviews that I subscribed to it and I spoke about a particular article in one copy that interested me! I didn't do to badly with interviews and getting places either Dunno if it helped or not though, they did seem quite impressed! (A 17year old (at the time) that READS! Omg! LOL)

Hey Little Noo,

I think it's a great idea to get a subscription to Practising Midwife at this stage. It certainly won't do any harm, and it'll give you a head start on current hot topics! It's a nice easy read too, so it should put you in good stead with your interviews. Wish I'd thought of doing it before my application! I don't know how I managed to get a place on the course... I did a bit of googling before my interview and read some really rubbish articles that weren't particularly relevant, but I didn't know this at the time. But I think any interest that you've shown in getting some knowledge about midwifery before your interview is really important.

I think if you could have a read of a Department of Health (DOH) document, that might be useful too, for example 'Maternity Matters'.... This is the new one that is out and has had a fair bit of coverage in the media. Have you heard of/seen it? It's quite easy to access on the DOH website.

Here's the link:

Scoll down to halfway in the page and click the link that is just above 'What's in it for commissioners and service providers?'.

I LOVE practising midwife, it is easy to read, and has interesting articles and are really good for essays.

I too didn't do to well pre-interview as I didn't know where to get info from and was not online then (dark days they were!)

So read a few newspaper articles and joined sms and read a couple of old MIDIRS.

When I think of the things Isiad in my interview I am amazed I got in!

I love the Practising Midwife, I read it from cover to cover.

I subscribed to it before I applied for a place on the course, and saved all the copies, I can now look back and re-read them if I want some information on a particular topic.

I love The PM! Noo and found it excellent throughout my training. It is easy to read (no major jargon) and found it great when doing essays too just to get an easy to read hold on each subject area.

Defo mention it at interviews, and look on the RCM / MIDIRS websites for any up to date news too. More than anything Universities want to know that you are passionate and committed to being a midwife, have interests in women's health (so look at anything to do with contraception / sexual health / breastfeeding / smoking in pregancy etc). Do not mention babies hehehehehe, and have a clear answer as to why you do not want to be a nurse , but a midwife instead. Also look on NICE site for the downloadable guidelines and really have a good read, talk about them at interview

Best of luck on any interviews. I have interviewed students for places at UNI and the passion, knowledge of women / women's health and how you will cope with the course is what they really want to know! Go for it!
