Great, at least you will know some people before you start.

I'm looking forward to the hospital placements and getting all the hands-on experience.

I'm not looking forward to living on a student budget, possibly living far away from home and the short holidays we'll get!!!

But hey, I've got Access to get through first!! :-)

I'm really looking forward to meeting my year group and the Uni days - definitely the academic side, which will hopefully lay a few ghosts to rest for me personally!! Also very much looking forward to working with my mentor in the Community and witnessing births on D/S.

I'm not looking forward to the office politics of midwives, which I hear about already, working in an environment that is under-staffed and under-funded and I'm dreading missing an assembly or Sports Day :-(

But other than that.. I really cannot wait to start.

Hi im new, very early days for me just considering taking this career choice and enrolling onto an access course - the only thing that is putting me off doing this is doing VE etc - will it just become the norm ?? I would be mad not to follow this career path just for that wouldnt i ? well i suppose i hate the thought of doing bloodtest, stitches etc too !!! hhmmm maybe i should have a rethink ! lol

I've had blood taken loads of times and no matter how gentle the person is and how little it hurts at the time I always get a big bruise!

I think I'd be ok with the bloodtaking well I hope so!

I too was terrified about doing these skills- but that's all they are-just skills- the first time will be awful but then it'll just be routine.

My mentor made me do a VE on my very first shift on labour ward- i hated her for that at the time but now i'm quite glad- it got it out of the way quickly- it's not as bad as you think it's going to be!!

As for taking blood- there will always be the ones that go 'OWWWW' and the ones that say 'that didnt hurt at all....' so, whether it's a reflection on how you do it or not is debatable!!

good luck all you guys! let us know how it feels to do these for the first time!! xxxx

do they actually tell you where to 'look' with your fingers when you do a VE or do you just go in and have a feel around!!??? god i am dreading it!

that, and also maybe having to do an Episiotomy and stitches (ok so not going to be a first year thing most likely!!)

oh and actually putting a needle into someone real -not as a practice on an orange or whatever. not bothered about the blood/ needles/ veins -but putting it all together hmmmm

also petrified that something will really smell and get up my nose -in a really horrid way iykwim. my sense of smell is that of a bloodhound sometimes, i can smell things a mile off so if something is really horrible it may just be a bit much for me lol..

my WORST fear -is being torn in 2 many directions at once by my little boys. my eldest is just about to start school and i wil have to miss out on loads of things there (although i get to take him on his first few weeks)
....and over-reliance on my in-laws for my youngest's childcare -hope they don't feel too put upon as i can't afford playschool full time!!

BEST -getting to witness something so amazing i will remember it forever hopefully!
