Default Stories like this worry me...

Just read this news article yesterday and it worried me, especially because I think this is the hospital where my placement would probably be if I get into my first choice uni

Oh what a farce!! Instead of the management being concerned about what has gone wrong they are on a witch hunt. They have handled this so badly and is a PR nightmare that I'm sure they will have to dig and dig to get out of.

Their reputation ( hospital) doesn't look good and students will start asking not to go there, I'm sure the issue could have been managed more professionally and discreetly instead of becoming such a huge public issue because the public will side with the midwives not the management as they appear incompetent.

When my family or my friends read things like this in the news I get the negative comments such as midwifery is such a bitchy profession, underpaid & overworked, not guaranteed a job and all the rest of it. I try not to get annoyed coz I know they're only concerned for me and they only really see the negative side of things in the news.

Papers tend to sensationalise things in order to sell them, i had it with my local trust and for a time refused to go there, but in the end i told myself i was being silly and there i am.

If midwifery is what you want to do at that trust then go for it, good luck xx

i can see it from both sides though......
it is true, you are goverend by your code of conduct whch basically says that you have to uphold the profession. I think it was quite naive to put comments like these in public forums (dont know much about bebo so am presuming it is a public forum???) and not expect a comeback.....

but also sad for the MW's involved that they felt so strongly about the unit but could not speak out to management.

I think there could have been better private ways of airing their frustrations?

Wouldn't have been better if the people who are 'investigating' the 23 midwives actually 'investigated' WHY the moral was so low and actually did something about it???????

Easily done all of this. Social networking sites are full of this sort of thing and I can see why the midwives did this, a pity they felt the need to post on there rather than to try and sort it out. Who's to know maybe they have tried?

Interesting views with regards to facebook, bebo etc...

Apparently many prospective employers are looking up theri intervieweees on these sites to check out their 'character'

I think they were silly to post such remarks in a fairly public arena but I love the fact that when asked if the trust had looked into the issues raised there was no comment. Also, if the head of midwifery was the one mainly criticised isn't it a conflict of interest for her to head the investigation? She's hardly going to be objective over the whole matter. They were silly but they are going to pay a high price for it without there being any changes made to prevent their replacements from becoming equally frustrated.

I'm also a bit concerned at the fact that employers can even look at people's facebook profiles as most people make their profile private so that only their friends can see it. What gives them the right to breach people's privacy like this? Are we going to get to the point that we will all have our homes bugged in case we make a dodgy comment in the privacy of our home?

Bee

Like you I am hoping to get into UWS and placements would be at Wishaw and I am a bit concerned about this. I just can't understand why women who are presumably intelligent and able to articulate themselves felt the need to deal with these issues in this manner. If there actually is an issue at the hospital, hopefully this will bring matters to a head.

I am just a bit of a gob so I know if I felt so strongly I would need to say something to the managers concerned........Again - worrying.....
