Default Help needed!! How to get experience?

Help! I think i will go mad if i don't sort myself out soon.
I really want to apply to be a midwife and have been advised that my qualifications are ok but need to get experience of care. I have applied for bank work at the local hospital but not heard yet and am not sure I'll get any as have no relevant experience. I have just found out about Home-start volunteers which i could probably do as am mum and ex foster carer, or should i try and get a job at the local nursing home for a bit of direct care experience? or should i try and do some care work for an agency - where you go into peoples homes? As am working part time at the mo and 3 kids time is tight and can't change my job as i work for my husband in his own business.
Please advise what anyone thinks would be the best option at the moment????
I really wanted to apply for next september but as have nothing to go on my ps yet is there any point?

Hi Dizzy

Is raising 3 children not experience? I bet when you sat and thought about it there could be loads you could put on your ps, you may be right about the bank work as many trusts prefer 6 months experience.
What about volunteer work? Or work in a mums and tots group or something like that?

Hope this helps some x

I bet you really have loads already. I have no care work experience and I got in. I bet you have skills in: communication, team working, time management, organisation, all essential skills for a midwife. Have you looked at the personal statement examples thread?

How about volunteering a few hours a week in a nursing home/hospice?
Some residential homes look for volunteers to help taking people out and about, shopping and the like.

Thanks girls, some good ideas there. I know i probably do have some relevant experience really - just feeling a bit fed up as everyone seems to be doing access courses and doing something towards their goal and i feel a bit stuck.
Do you think becoming a Home start volunteer would be useful? I think i could manage to fit that in at the moment , and then maybe do some care work when the kids go back to school in September?

I think that volunteering with homestart would be a great idea and i think that they put you on courses and such like. All of which you can mention when called for interview. x

Hi there, home start is a great idea I didn't do it myself but know a few already on the course who did. I was worried about having relavent experience, even thought I had worked as an agency HCA I had no formal training and it was when I was 18, so 8 years ago now. Before I applied I asked at an open day if my lack of care experience would be a problem, the tutor asked me if I had children ( I have 3 also) and she said you have life experience and thats just as valuable! Anyone I got my place so it must have been enough... Good luck! xx
